15th Anniversary of the Beatification of the Drina Martyrs

The 15th anniversary of the beatification of the Blessed Drina Martyrs was marked by a Holy Mass celebrated on September 24th in Goražde. The Holy Mass was led by Cardinal Vinko Puljić, Archbishop Emeritus of Vrhbosna.

Concelebrating with the Cardinal were the parish priest of Goražde and Chancellor of the Military Ordinariate in BiH rev. Josip Tadić, and rev. Fabijan Stanušić, parish priest of Pale and military chaplain. The faithful also participated, including religious sisters from the Daughters of Divine Love - the order to which the Blessed Drina Martyrs belonged—and members of the Armed Forces of BiH from the Support Command in Butmir, led by General Martin Propadalo.

At the beginning of the Holy Mass, rev. Tadić welcomed everyone present

In his homily, Cardinal Vinko recalled the moment of the Drina Martyrs' beatification. He highlighted that the process was successfully concluded thanks to the late rev. Anto Baković, sister Slavica Buljan, and others who had gathered the necessary materials. He noted that when God creates something, He desires to do so in partnership with people, thereby placing great trust in humanity. In this context, he mentioned that reading about the Drina Martyrs left him in awe of their courage. He added that such martyrdom was possible only through love for and trust in Christ. "The perpetrators are gone, yet the sisters continue to live among us through veneration and prayer", the cardinal emphasized, noting that love and integrity cannot be instilled by schools, mobile phones, or the internet, but only by the hearts of parents and educators. In conclusion, he asked God to grant those present a true, heroic faith through the intercession of the Blessed Martyrs.

At the end of the Holy Mass—during which the liturgical singing was led by the Sisters of the Divine Love  - parish priest rev. Tadić thanked everyone who had contributed in any way to the construction of the church dedicated to the Blessed Martyrs of Drina, as well as all those who, through their participation and support, help preserve the memory of their martyrial witnessing.

He expressed special gratitude to members of the Armed Forces of BiH, recalling that they were among the first to begin work on the church's construction.

Let us remind that during the Eucharistic celebration at the Zetra Olympic Hall in Sarajevo on September 24th 2011—attended by approximately 25 000 believers and pilgrims from BiH, Croatia, Slovenia, and other countries across Europe and the world—the envoy of Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Angelo Amato beatified five sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Love - sister M. Jula Ivanišević and her fellow sisters : sister M. Bernadeta Banja, sister M. Krizina Bojanc, sister M. Antonija Fabjan, and sister M. Berchmana Leidenix—whom Chetniks killed in December 1941 out of hatred for the Catholic faith.
