25th jubilee meeting of the altar servers of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna

Strengthened in faith and hope to walk uprightly through life

On Saturday, May 10th, the annual meeting of the ministers (altar servers) of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna was held at the Catholic School Centre "Petar Barbarić" in Travnik, the 25th in a row, under the central motto: "Hope - Walk = Believe Today" (NaDaj se - hoDaj = DaNas vjeruj).

According to established practice, the meeting consisted of two parts: a liturgical one in the seminary church of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and the entertainment-sports-recreational one, which included a quiz of knowledge from the altar service and a competition in sports skills and other activities (football, table tennis, chess, Ludo, animation - games without borders). It is also important to point out that this year's novelty is an additional category: literary works or videos on the theme of the Jubilee Year.

After the arrival of about 300 altar servers from 18 parishes of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese, those present had a fitting May devotion and the opportunity to prepare for the sacrament of reconciliation.

Altar Service

The Holy Mass was celebrated in the seminary church and led by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić, concelebrated by about ten priests, mostly those who came accompanied by altar servers, including the Commissioner for the Pastoral Care of Vocations of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna, Rev. Ljubo Zadrić.

Before the Eucharist began, those present were greeted and welcomed by the spiritual director of the Travnik Seminary, Rev. Jakov Kajinić, who emphasized that “2025 is a Jubilee year, and we are in a Jubilee church in which the body of the venerable servant of God Petar Barbarić is kept.”

At the beginning of the Holy Mass, Archbishop Tomo also greeted those present, especially the young people who serve around the altar in their parishes. "We have gathered first of all to thank God for the grace of serving the altar of the Lord, both we priests and you altar servers who help us, and to ask God's blessing so that our service may be of spiritual benefit to all of us, but also to all parish communities and the faithful who gather at Holy Masses", said Msgr. Vukšić.

In an appropriate homily adapted to the age of the altar servers present, he first spoke about the motto of the meeting: Hope - Walk = Believe Today. "This first part, Hope, fits in perfectly with all the events in the Catholic Church during the Jubilee Year, which 2025 is, in order since the birth of Jesus. Therefore, this year is an opportunity to remember with great gratitude the birth of Christ the Saviour and Redeemer of the human race. He who was called, in the words of St. Paul, our hope, encouraged all gatherings, pilgrimages and events during the Jubilee Year, including this one, to be under the motto of hope", said Archbishop Tomo, and explained that human and Christian life is one long pilgrimage in the hope that life has no end, but that at the end of this earthly life there is a falling asleep, followed by eternal life.

Following this, he again expressed the hope "that this life of ours is transient, and that the homeland of all of us is in heaven." "The hope we are talking about is first and foremost a call to strengthen our faith and walk through this life in it. Encouraged by hope, we walk through life with our heads held high even in those situations that are not favourable to us", he encouraged those present, and then spoke about the example of Petar Barbarić, a brilliant student from Travnik who, through his life, became an honourable servant of God and is being canonized. "May he constantly encourage you with his example of life so that in your parish communities at the altar you may do your mission better, more dignified, and more faithfully", said the archbishop, and then pointed to another example of a saintly life, that of Blessed Ivan Merz, whose memorial day is being celebrated today.

"He lived a life of holiness between the two world wars and is one of about 20 blessed people from the Croatian-speaking area. The Church remembers him, among other things, because, in addition to his own consecration, he also worked on educating young people for Christian life. Thus, today, God's providence has given us two examples to follow: Petar Barbarić and Blessed Merz", said Archbishop Tomo, who concluded his homily by saying: "May Blessed Merz and all the Croatian blessed people nourish us in faith and lead us on our pilgrimage so that together with them and all the other blessed people, saints and martyrs, we may sing 'Glory to God above'."

The liturgical celebration was animated by a mixed choir under the direction of theologian Petar Kolak.

Entertainment, sports and recreational program

At the end of the Holy Mass, Rev. Ljubo provided some technical information about the continuation of the program, which followed in the auditorium of the Centre, where he also welcomed and animated them. Rev. Zadrić briefly presented the logo and motto of this year's motto to the young people and, through an interactive discussion, explained the three "yeses" from the motto of the meeting.

The attendees then had the opportunity to watch a five-minute video on the central theme of the meeting, in which young people from the Novi Šeher parish participated.

Lunch followed and the beginning of the entertainment-sports-recreational program. In addition to participating in the quiz on the knowledge of the altar service, basic religious doctrine and the Holy Scripture, competitions in sports skills and other activities were organized: football, table tennis, chess, Ludo, animator’s games without borders.
