On Mission Sunday, October 23rd, the Sisters of Mercy of the Province of Our Lady - Sarajevo celebrated the 150th anniversary of their arrival in Banja Luka with a Holy Mass and an academy in the parish church of Visitation of BVM, which is located next to their monastery. Also, on October 29th, they celebrated the same anniversary in Derventa.
The Sisters of Charity, who arrived in the City on Vrbas from the whole Province, led by the Provincial Superior sister Vinka Bilješko and the House Superior sister Mirela Majdandžić, were joined by the Sisters of the Zagreb Province led by the Superior of the Society sister Miroslava Bradica.
The solemn Holy Mass was led by the bishop of Banja Luka, Msgr. Franjo Komarica together with auxiliary bishop Msgr. Marko Semren, OFM, and with the concelebration of the parish priest and the dean of Banja Luka, rev. Žarko Vladislav Ošap and several other priests.
In the homily, Msgr. Komarica pointed out that the sisters of mercy “were ready to go where the Church sent them according to their religious superiors”. In particular, he singled out sister Cecilija Grgić, who was tortured, killed and burned together with the parish priest from Presnače in 1995.
After the Eucharist, a special program followed. A historical account of the activities of the sisters in Banja Luka was presented by sister M. Julijana Djaković, and the presentation of Dr. Nevenka Nekić's book Naša klecala i baklje was also held.
The celebration of the same anniversary in Derventa began with a Holy Mass in the parish church of St. George, led by the parish priest in Žeravac, OFM Mirko Filipović. In addition to the Derventa parish priest rev. Marko Slišković, 13 other priests concelebrated. In addition to numerous believers, sisters of charity from Osijek, Sisak, Zagreb, Mostar and Sarajevo also participated in the Holy Mass.
In his sermon, OFM Mirko emphasized that the Sisters of Mercy, with their approximately 20 000 members in 12 congregations spread over 90 countries, are today the most numerous women's community in the entire Catholic Church. He also mentioned the first Sisters of Charity who came to Zagreb in 1845 and then to other cities, including Derventa in 1872.
After the Holy Mass, the program continued in Napretkov dom with a ceremonial academy and an exhibition of photos and documents about the sisters of Mercy in Derventa. Sister M. Zorislava Katić spoke about the history of the Society, and especially about the activity in this city for a century and a half. Those present could also watch a documentary film about the activities of the Sisters of Mercy in this city.
