Annual meeting of seminarians and educators from Croatia and BiH

The traditional annual meeting of seminarians from the "small seminaries" of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by their educators, was held from Friday, May 10th to Sunday, May 12th in Novigrad na Dobri, hosted by the Interdiocesan Seminary in Zagreb.

The meeting took place under the motto Be quick in zeal, fervent in spirit, serve the Lord! (Romans 12:11), and 28 seminarians and six educators (rectors, priests, prefects) participated from: Interdiocesan Seminary in Zagreb, Archdiocese seminary Petar Barbarić Travnik, Franciscan Seminary in Sinj and Conventual Franciscan Seminary from Zagreb from the Holy Spirit. Due to earlier commitments, "collegians" from Požega and seminarians of the Franciscan seminary in Visoko in Bosnia and Herzegovina were not present. It should be noted that there are currently 51 seminarians in six "small seminaries" in the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 12 educators are taking care of them.

Visit to the place of captivity Bl. Stepinac

In the evening of May 10th, the seminarians and educators arrived in Novigrad na Dobri, where they were welcomed by the resident parish priest, Father Filip Vicić, CM, and the rector of the Šalata seminary, Rev. Matija Pavlaković.

The program of the central day of the meeting, May 11th, began with a morning prayer in the home chapel of the pilgrimage centre led by rector Pavlaković with the assistance of seminarians from Šalata. Breakfast was followed by a presentation of the seminaries moderated by the host. Then there was a football competition, which took place in the school sports hall of the Jarče Polje Regional School near Novigrad na Dobri. Parallel to the soccer competition, a chess tournament took place. The soccer tournament was won by the host team of the Interdiocesan Seminary from Zagreb, the second place went to the Franciscan seminarians from Sinj, and the third place went to the seminarians from Travnik. The best in chess were the hosts from Zagreb's Šalata, who defeated the Conventual Franciscans from Zagreb's Sveti Duh. The mayor of Netretić Municipality, Marijan Peretić, presented the commemorative cups to the participants.

The afternoon part of the program included a visit to Karlovac and its cultural and sacred sights, including the National Shrine of St. Joseph. After the May devotion and prayer to the patron saint of Croatia, the seminarians toured Karlovac and the surrounding area on a tourist drive, and then headed to Krašić and the place of captivity of blessed Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac. The evening Holy Mass celebration, which was preceded by Eucharistic adoration before the Most Holy in the parish church of the Holy Trinity in Krašić, was led by the canon of the Chapter of Zagreb and general postulator for causes of canonization and beatification of the Zagreb Archdiocese and the former rector of the Šalata seminary (1998 - 2005) Msgr. Juraj Batelja in celebration with the local parish priest, Rev. Ivan Vučak, seminary educators and seminarians.

Travnik next host

After the Holy Mass, the seminarians visited the Memorial Home of Bl. Alojzije Stepinac and prayed in the places where he lived and died as a martyr.

On Sunday, May 12th, in the morning hours, a working meeting of educators was held, where the gathered leaders exchanged experiences about the work of seminaries and the education of candidates entrusted to them, followed by the prayer of the rosary, which was animated by the seminarians together with local believers in the parish church of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary. Then the Holy Mass celebration was led by the educator of the Franciscan seminarians from the Holy Spirit in Zagreb, OFM Zvonimir Pervan, OFMConv, and the appropriate sermon was delivered by rev. Željko Marić, rector of the Archdiocese's Seminary in Travnik, Petar Barbarić.

At the end of the celebration, the local parish priest Vicić addressed the crowd, thanking them for coming and encouraging the parishioners to pray for new spiritual vocations in the Church in Croatia. The new meeting will be hosted by the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna and the Petar Barbarić Archdiocese's Seminary in Travnik in mid-May next year.
