During the Holy Mass, on the feast day of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, on June 29th, in the Cathedral of the Heart of Jesus in Sarajevo, the metropolitan archbishop of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić ordained five deacons as priests.
With Msgr. Vukšić the concelebrants were: the Apostolic Nuncio in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Francis Assisi Chullikatt, Provincial of the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena, OFM Zdravko Dadić, Vicar General of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese, Msgr. Slađan Ćosić and about 60 other priests, among whom were heads from the Archdiocesan Missionary International Seminary Redemptoris Mater, Franciscan Theology, and parish priests of the parishes from which the ordained come. The Holy Mass was attended by nuns from various congregations as well as relatives of the ordained, parishioners from their home parishes and other believers.
Eternal question: Who is Jesus
After the announced biblical readings, the rector of the Archdiocesan Missionary International Seminary Redemptoris Mater, Rev. Michele Capasso and the master of Franciscan theology OFM Danijel Nikolić presented the candidates for priestly ordination and guaranteed that the Christian people, who were asked, and the responsible persons consider them worthy, Msgr. Vukšić delivered an appropriate sermon at the beginning in which he said that the appearance of Jesus Christ, his actions and teachings, his personality, insight into human intentions and personal modesty, his manner of discussion and general attitude towards people, left few of his contemporaries indifferent. He then recalled the event in Caesarea Philippi when Jesus probably surprised his disciples by asking them what people were saying about him, that is, who they thought he was. "From the answers given to Jesus by his disciples, we first learn that they too were very curious, listened to people talk about Jesus, and probably, at least sometimes, participated in discussions with the pious Jewish people and listened to and learned various opinions about it from these people about who is their teacher. And precisely thanks to this behaviour of the apostles, it is possible to discern from their answers, recorded by the evangelist Matthew, that at that time among pious people there were at least four different opinions about Jesus", interpreted Archbishop Vukšić, saying that some thought that Jesus was actually some appearance of John the Baptist, while other pious Jews believed that the prophet Elijah might have returned from the other world, others thought it was possible that it could be Jeremiah, and still others assumed that it was some other prophet.
Personal inquiry
"However, Jesus was not actually interested in all these opinions of different groups of the people, but this conversation with the disciples served him as an introduction to ask them the question: 'And you, who do you say I am?' That is, the real goal of Jesus' entire conversation, was his desire to hear the apostle's answer to the question. Therefore, the words of the apostle Peter, who accepted the challenge and said on behalf of the entire community of Jesus' disciples at that time: 'You are the Anointed Christ, the Son of the living God', are the crown of Jesus' education and teaching of the disciples up to that point", emphasized Archbishop Tomo, reminding that St. Augustine wrote and preached and asserted that Jesus does not call the best, the most capable and the holiest, but wants those whom he calls to become and be.
In the continuation of his sermon, Msgr. Vukšić said that it remains a secret why God calls certain people and that there is no exhaustive answer to the question of why Jesus calls them and not others. "Dear brothers, Jesus called you, and you answered him freely, you chose him and gave your consent to his call. But, as St. Theresa of Avila, with every choice of something or someone there is a renunciation of something or someone. It's like that in life, in family, in marriage. It is the same with the election of a priestly vocation. And only that priest, who understands and applies it, is on his way to achieving the goal that St. Augustin wrote about", encouraged the archbishop of Vrhbosna.
Young Holy Mass blessing
After the sermon, the rite of priestly ordination followed, during which those present prayed the Litany of All Saints, and the archbishop of Vrhbosna laid his hands on the heads of the ordained. After the pastors of the native parishes helped the newly ordained priests to put on the stole and put on the chasuble, Archbishop Vukšić anointed their palms with holy oil and symbolically handed over a plate with the host and a chalice of wine and exchanged the whole of peace with each of them.
The following were ordained as priests: Rev. Jesus Antonio Gazquez Hernandez, Rev. Mislav Anton Botica, Rev. Nilson Gerardo Andrade Ibarra (for the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna) and OFM Hrvoje Žabić and OFM Danijel Lukić (for the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena). At the end of the Holy Mass, Msgr. Vukšić congratulated the newly ordained priests and handed them certificates of ordination. Finally, ordained distributed their blessing to everyone in the Sarajevo Cathedral. The liturgical singing was animated by a mixed choir under the direction of maestro OFM Emanuel Josić.
