On Clean Wednesday - Ash Wednesday, February 14th, when the Church begins the season of Lent, the Eucharist in the Sarajevo Cathedral of the Heart of Jesus was led by the director of the Pontifical Missionary Works in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Luka Tunjić.
In the concelebration were the Vicar General of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese, Msgr. Slađan Ćosić, chancellor rev. Mladen Kalfić and professors of the Catholic Faculty of Theology in Sarajevo: Rev. Milenko Krešić, Rev. Ilija Marković and Rev. Ljubo Zadrić, and at the Eucharistic celebration, many believers of the capital gathered, among whom were nuns from different societies.
In the appropriate homily, Msgr. Tunjić spoke about the season of Lent, which is an opportunity to reflect on life, which should be directed more towards the Church and the teaching of Jesus. That time, as he emphasized, warns "of the living God who is permanently present among us and of our danger of constantly slipping away and escaping under the cloak of God's love because we want to do everything by our own strength".
Referring to the biblical readings that call the believer to conversion and return to God, Msgr. Tunjić encouraged the believers to allow the "balm of God's grace to heal our hearts". Among other things, he emphasized the importance of personal struggle against sin and against one's weaknesses in order for a person to reconcile with God, because "Lent is a time of reconciliation with God, with neighbours and the whole world."
He then spoke about righteousness, which helps build life and strengthen faith, and said that it excludes doing good "by all means" and includes humility and simplicity of life. "It includes a meek and humble heart in which every conversion begins", explained the preacher, emphasizing that there is no true conversion without the conversion of the heart, because it is where the Lenten journey of every believer begins and takes place.
At the end, he urged that each person's Lent should begin in the privacy of the heart by doing good deeds, prayer and fasting, but in such a way that these deeds touch, permeate his heart and completely shape it.
The sermon was followed by the rite of putting ash on the believer’s heads, with a call to conversion expressed in the words "Remember, man, that you are dust and that you will turn to dust", or "Convert and believe in the gospel".
The liturgy was animated by the choir under the direction of sister Petronila Kovačević.
