On Sunday, October 22nd, on the memorial day of St. John Paul II, the 16th birthday of the Archdiocesan Youth Pastoral Centre Ivan Pavao II was solemnly celebrated in Sarajevo with a Holy Mass and an appropriate program. The motto of the celebration was: (Epi)centre of love.
The Eucharist was led by the archbishop of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić, with the concelebration of about 20 priests, among whom was the director of the NCM, Dr. Rev. Šimo Maršić. Before the beginning of the Holy Mass, greetings and words of welcome were given by Director Maršić. He quoted Saint Pope John Paul II. who told young people in Solin in 1998 that they were "invited to the front lines of building peace" and indicated that these words are relevant in these uncertain times.
In an appropriate sermon suitable for children and young people, Msgr. Vukšić pointed out that "Jesus lived, acted and spoke quite provocatively". "Many followed him and accepted his teaching, but at the same time, because of his way of speaking and the content of his message, he gained many enemies", said the archbishop, and then interpreted the Holy Mass readings in which Jesus answered the gathered Pharisees and Herod's followers whether they should pay taxes to the Roman Empire.
"Two opposing groups at that time united in this case in order not to disqualify Jesus, compromise him both before the religious authorities and before the political society," said Msgr. Vukšić then explained in understandable language that the Pharisees were Jewish nationalists who dreamed of political freedom, while the Herodocians were collaborators and collaborators of the occupiers.
He then explained that Jesus, on the basis of a coin with the image of the emperor at the time, encouraged both of them to "give to the emperor what is emperor, but to God God's." He further pointed out that this incident is interpreted as the separation of worldly from spiritual authority and underlined that Jesus' message is actually the "third way" for all "Pharisees" and "Herodites" of all times. "Jesus called us all to be responsible for the society in which we live. A Christian is not separated in his spiritual life so that he would have no connection with what is called the world. A Christian is responsible for society, people, processes, events, in the manner of Jesus, together with other people in the society in which he lives", said Archbishop Tomo and underlined that it is the duty of a Christian to behave responsibly in his mission in all duties, jobs and obligations given to them by Providence.
He further emphasized to young people that they are obliged to study and go study, pass positively on exams, prepare for their mission and take responsibility for their lives and cooperate with other people.
Bringing the homily to an end, he encouraged those present to be responsible towards their obligations, as this will best show how they are disciples of Jesus who want to follow his example.
The liturgical celebration was animated by a band from Zenica, Novo Nebo, with songs and music.
This was followed by an appropriate program, which this year was led by peer educator Mia Rabljenović, whose presentation on the work of the NCM can be read in the Voice of the Youth column.
The gathering continued with a concert by the band Profetes by Frama Kiseljak and a reception in the restaurant and hall of the NCM, which also showed gratitude to all the young people, friends, partners, volunteers and others who have invested a part of themselves in this institution and its projects over the past 16 years.
