The faithful community of St. Anthony of Padua in Boće near Brčko celebrated the 100th anniversary of the parish's establishment on August 5th. The solemn evening Eucharist was led by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić.
Around 10 priests concelebrated the Holy Mass, including the dean of the Brčko deanery and the parish priest in Brčko, rev. Damir Ivanović, and the parish priest rev. Filip Maršić.
Before the start of the Holy Mass, held in the courtyard in front of the church, children welcomed the archbishop with a recitation, presenting him with flowers and briefly narrated the history of the parish. Rev. Maršić also extended his greetings, expressing gratitude to God for this day.
In his homily, Monsignor Vukšić thanked God for all the births and baptisms that have occurred in this faith community, as well as for all the other sacraments that have been administered there. He also praised all those who dedicated themselves to God and were born in this parish over the past 100 years. "As descendants of their Christian ancestors, with faith in eternal life, we pray for all who have died in this parish during the past century (...) May the Lord be merciful and kind to all of them! We also pray for the deceased chaplains who carried out part of their priestly service in this community: Izidor Poljak, Ivan Zirdum, Rudolf Klampfl, Petar Živković, Josip Kalčik, and Juro Čolić. Ilija Matanović, Ivo Božić, Ivo Paradžik, Josip Janjić, and Ivo Tomašević thanked for the grace of having served here and pray for a happier future for this region, all its people, and its nation", said the archbishop. He also reminded that the current parish priest, Filip, celebrated 25 years of priesthood and 50 years of life this year.
In the second part of the sermon, he emphasized the "very fortunate circumstance that we celebrate this parish jubilee on the eve of a holiday that has two beautiful names in our nation: the Transfiguration of the Lord and the Face of God". He spoke about the liturgical readings that convey the event of Jesus' Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and mentioned that the apostle Peter was a direct witness to it.
He underlined that the purpose of Jesus' Transfiguration was the manifestation of His divine dignity and the encouragement of the disciples' faith before the trials that would follow. He then questioned the significance and message that this event holds for today's Church and believers, answering that it serves as encouragement for "those who are going through difficult moments, exposed to problems, illnesses, and other trials of life, or internal doubts about Jesus".
At the end of the homily, he emphasized the fundamental message of the feast: "Listen to Jesus, the beloved Son of God! And you will do well if you cling to Him as to a lamp and a guide!"
At the end of the Eucharist, Archbishop Vukšić was greeted by the representative of the parishioners, Marijan Blažević, who presented him with a fitting gift as a memory of this festive occasion.
After the Holy Mass, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna blessed the pastoral centre, and then the celebration of this anniversary continued with singing, dancing, and a suitable program. Rev. Filip presented tokens of appreciation to those who supported the parish community: the Central Office for Croats Abroad, the Mayor of Brčko, Zijad Nišić, the president of the Boće Local Community, Vlado Ivić, and Sister Ljubica Josić.
This celebration marked the culmination of several months of spiritual, cultural, and sports events that were organized in this faith community. The closer preparation was carried out through masses during a triduum. On the first day, rev. Ivanović celebrated the Eucharist in Donje Dubravice; on the second day, the parish priest in Bijeljina, rev. Andrej Lukanović, celebrated Holy Mass in Boderište, and on the eve, the local son rev. Mirko Ikić served in the centre of the parish.
It's worth noting that the parish of St. Anthony of Padua in Boće is located in the northeastern part of Bosnian Posavina, about 20 km southwest of Brčko as the crow flies. According to the Dayton Agreement, it belongs to the Brčko District. The parish was founded in 1923 by separating certain settlements from Zovik and Brčko. The church was built in 1926 and has been renovated several times. Today, the parish is home to around 400 faithful.
Finally, it's important to highlight that the first and perhaps most famous local parish priest was Izidor Poljak, a priest and poet born in 1883 in Bednja in Zagorje. While building the church in Boće, he contracted pneumonia and died on August 21st, 1924.
