In the church of the Queen of St. Rosary on Banjski Brijeg in Sarajevo on December 15th, name day of Bl. Martyrs of Drina was celebrated.
The Eucharistic Celebration in the Monastery Church of the Sisters of the Daughters of God's Love was led by auxiliary Bishop of Vrhbosna Msgr. Pero Sudar in communion with 20 priests. Mass was attended by numerous nuns, led by the provincial chief of staff sister M. Gordana Igrec, the theologians and believers gathered in the church which is also the sanctuary of Bl. Martyrs of Drina.
Before the beginning of the Mass celebration, the guests were welcomed by rev. Ljubo Zelenika, the rector of the Shrine of the Martyrs of Drina, then, by beginning the worship, Bishop Sudar said a few appropriate words by referring to the holy example of sisters M. Jula Ivanišević, M. Berchmana Leidenix, M. Krizina Bojanc, M. Antonija Fabjan and M. Bernadeta Banja. He noted that God finds pleasant not only a heart that is without sin but also the heart that seeks to eradicate sin.
The Auxiliary Bishop of Vrhbosna first spoke of Mass readings. He pointed out that through human history since Cain and Abel "blood streams were flowing". He stated that the blood of the martyrs ran alongside this "rivers of blood". He wondered what is it that makes human torture turn into martyrdom.
"In the spirit of today's Word of God it could be said that the only force that can make this incredible conversion is God who transforms the crime into the miracle of grace", the Bishop said, as always there were those who were willing to give up their life for another and because of God. The bishop wondered who was the one who gives the power "to give life from love to life." By saying that God had spoken of the most difficult four days of the Martyrs of Drina.
"Those last four days are a miracle. There are witnesses of their martyrdom. Their last days are, in my deepest belief, the inescapable testimony of how God's love leaves roots in the heart of a human being. They love their life so much that they sacrifice it for love. We only don’t have the testimonies of these few last hours when the sisters were detained, but it is clear that they have concluded that they will defend their love for God with life", the Bishop said and reminded that 8,000 Catholics and Muslims were slaughtered in that part of BiH. He pointed out that the blood of martyrs from the Drina was also poured into that blood, and are inseparable bond between God the creator and the created, between the Redeemer and the Redeemers." Only when this is understood, is seen how great the love of God is toward man", said the bishop, stressing that in every evil God finds ways to appease his grace, goodness, and love.
At the end of the Mass, the bishop and the priests went to the side altar with the image of the Blessed Martyrs of Drina where they prayed together with the faithful.
The Mass celebration, with their singing, was animated by the Cathedral Choir under the guidance of the rev. Marko Stanušić.
The celebration was preceded with the three days of Masses and commemorative sermons that were celebrated in the evening by Msgr. Tomo Knežević, OFM Zvonko Miličić and Msgr. Anto Ćosić. Before each Mass, the rosary of Bl. Martyrs of Drina was prayed.
The voice of the murders of five nuns known to the people as the Martyrs of Drina killed by the Chetniks during the Second World War quickly spread. The archbishopric procedure for their beatification was opened in Sarajevo in December 1999, and after its completion the process was continued at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. After a positive outcome and the conclusion of theological and other experts, in January 2011, Pope Benedict XVI approved their proclamation to the Blessed.
The martyrs of Drina were proclaimed blessed on September 24th, 2011 in Sarajevo. A ceremonial Eucharistic celebration at the Zetra Olympic Center in Sarajevo was attended by Pope’s envoy Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Annunciation of the Saints.
