The Vrhbosna Theological Seminary once again hosted the annual meeting of animators of liturgical singing of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese (VN), which was organised on February 26th. 24 participants responded: priests, nuns and lay people who animate singing and playing in their parishes.
The meeting began with a prayer and greeting addressed by the regens chori of the Sarajevo Cathedral and the coordinator for church-liturgical music of the VN, rev. Marko Stanušić.
The first lecture entitled Musical Design of the Ordinary of the Holy Mass of Sanctus was given by the professor of liturgy at the Theological-Catechetical Institute in Mostar, Dr. sister Vinka Bešlić. In her presentation, sister Vinka explained how the text of the Sanctus came about. Speaking that it has a long tradition in the liturgy of the Church and as one of the oldest songs of the Holy Mass Ordinary whose role and meaning often still seem unclear to many, she also mentioned that in some stages of history the practice of taking melodies of other songs instead of Sanctus was present.
The next part of the working morning was the presentation of the singing psalms of rev. Stanušić, created in the last 18 years. Out of 35 composed psalms, the author chose eight, and they were sung by VBS theologians Stipe Gabrić and Marko Pavlović with organ accompaniment by rev. Stanušić, and they all can be found on Youtube.
The break was followed by a lecture on the topic of Children's boy's choirs given by the professor of liturgy at the KBF in Sarajevo, Dr. Ivan Rako. Pointing out that the roots of today's children's boy's choirs are in the chapels of the early and Middle Ages, he introduced the audience to the work of these choirs and their training. He explained that in the children's boy's choir, unlike the mixed choir for children and youth, soprano and alto are sung by boys. He also pointed out that women's singing was possible only in monasteries until the 19th century, and spoke about the importance of children's choirs.
At the end of the meeting, there was talk about the upcoming XVIII. meeting of the liturgical choirs of the VN which will be held on Saturday, May 14th, unless the coronavirus pandemic worsens. Also, the editor-in-chief of the periodical newsletter for liturgical music Magnificat, rev. Stanušić invited the participants to cooperate with articles, music reports and even new liturgical compositions.
