In the parish of St. Anthony of Padua in Busovača on June 13th, the central Holy Mass, with the concelebration of seven priests, was led by OFM Stipo Kljajić, PhD, Professor of Franciscan Theology in Sarajevo and the Zagreb KBF.
At the beginning, those present were greeted by the parish priest, OFM Zoran Jaković, who welcomed the people of Busovača and all pilgrims, as well as those who followed this Holy Mass through electronic media.
After reading the Bible readings and proclaiming the Gospel, OFM Stipo said in his sermon that this “Saint of the whole world” is represented by three symbols he holds in his hands - the Bible, the lily and the child Jesus. Since the 19th century, the time of the founding of the charitable associations of Kruh Sv. Ante, the fourth symbol is added - bread.
Prof. Kljajić, however, on the memorial of this saint, wanted to speak about only one symbol - the Bible, more precisely about the relationship of St. Anthony versus the Word of God. “He was a famous preacher of the gospel, so famous that the Church proclaimed him a church teacher. He zealously and authentically interpreted the word of God to his people and connected their lives with those of Jesus. He was occupied with the Bible, in love with it. But his preoccupation with the Bible did not stem from a mere desire for knowledge, but from the realization that you cannot love something you do not know. Precisely out of love for the God of St. Anthony tries to learn as much as possible about Him through his word. What Anthony knows, he preaches, and what he preaches, he lives”, pointed out OFM Stipo, saying that the example of St. Anthony should be a reminder to the believers of today’s generation to ask themselves where the word of God is in their lives and whether it exists at all. “If we really want to live our faith by life and word, not just baptism, then we should set God's word as life-determining, not to measure our human standards when faced with a choice, but to look in the Bible for what Jesus asks of me”, the preacher added, saying that there are many reasons why a person should feed on the Word of God.
“It is a holy book in which God speaks to the one who reads it. It is his direct speech to you. And, the Bible is not about Cain and Abel, but about all of us, and the biblical characters are us. I am convinced that St. Anthony would not have been a great saint if he had not constantly placed the Word of God in front of him as a mirror and if he had not looked at that mirror. Therefore, I urge everyone not to miss the treasure contained in the Bible, which is at our fingertips”, concluded OFM Stipo.
The Eucharist was animated by singing by the parish choir led by prof. Irena Čavara, and after the Holy Mass in front of the external altar there was a gathering with refreshments.
A sign that St. Anthony is a favourite saint in Central Bosnia, was already shown by the Holy Mass on the day before led by Dr. OFM Ivan Šarčević on June 12th, which gathered about 10 000 believers. The preacher pointed out that St. Anthony should be a role model to everyone today. Believers of today should follow the promptings of Scripture, be virtuous like a child and selflessly give because “St. Anthony gives Jesus as bread”.
