Sacrilege Committed in the Church of St. Vincent

On January 21st, the Blessed Sacrament was stolen from the monastery church of St. Vincent, the Sisters of Charity, located in the heart of Sarajevo, next to a road that also serves the tram.

During the day, a currently unknown perpetrator or several of them, under unclear circumstances, entered the convent's premises and the church, took the key to the tabernacle and stole the vessel with the large consecrated sacramental bread, and spilled the small consecrated sacramental breads from the ciborium which they did not steal, inside the tabernacle.

The sisters noticed this sacrilege on Tuesday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m., when they were coming to the church. However, as explained by the provincial superior of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul of the Province of the Divine Mother of God – Sarajevo, sister M. Vinka Bilješko, it is possible that everything happened before noon, with indications that the “preparation” for it may have been done the day before.

“Our sacristan, sister Branimira, saw on Monday evening that the envelopes and papers on which something is usually recorded in the sacristy were scattered. However, she neatly arranged them, thinking that one of the sisters had not put everything back in its place in a hurry. Especially since on Tuesday morning nothing unusual could be observed in the sacristy and the church. However, later we noticed that some keys were missing, from the front door, from the church… a total of five”, said sister Vinka, explaining that the thieves and/or Satanists who did this knew exactly what they were doing.

“Every morning after the Holy Mass, the sacristan neatly puts away the liturgical utensils and returns them to the sacristy. However, we saw that the chalice cloth (a handkerchief for wiping the chalice) had been stolen, and the chalice tray was turned upside down. The chalice also contained the key to the tabernacle, which the perpetrator took, tore off the pendant with the image of the miraculous medal, opened the tabernacle and stole the vessel with the large host, and from the ciborium he spilled the small hosts into the tabernacle", said the provincial superior, noting that they immediately called the police, who came, made a report and nothing more.

In addition to the vessel with the large consecrated host that is exhibited for adoration in this church on Thursdays, the sisters managed to discern that a microphone was also missing after this cruel act.

What is the motive and who is behind this sacrilege in the church of St. Vincent, which, together with the monastery that houses the headquarters of the Province of Divine Mother of God – Sarajevo, was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2011, remains to be seen. It should be kept in mind that the Church Code provides that "whoever throws away consecrated particles or takes or holds them for a sacrilegious purpose falls under the excommunication previously pronounced, reserved to the Apostolic See" (Can. 1367).
