The 132nd anniversary of the death of sister Luka Liengitz was marked

On April 2nd, the 132nd anniversary of the death of sister Luka Liengitz was marked at Betanija - the cemetery of the Sisters of the Daughters of God's Love, located in the suburbs of Sarajevo.

The Holy Mass was led by OFM Ivan Šarčević, Professor of Franciscan Theology in Sarajevo, in concelebration with the Guardian of the Bistrik Monastery, OFM Stjepan Radić.

Explaining the meaning of the name Betanija - the house of the poor, noting that this is the place where Jesus’ friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus lived, OFM Ivan emphasized in his homily “poor children and youth who worked in the Institute of Sv. Josip, where the young sister Luka Liengitz worked as a porter”. Referring to sister Luka in the role of a porter, OFM Ivan emphasized that this is a very important service in monasteries because “a porter means the first contact of people and the world with monks”. After elaborating on several points read from the life of young sister Luka, which are reflected in her solidarity with people, especially the poor, and in “building brotherhood and sisterhood in a divided world”, OFM Ivan concluded: “Sister Luka is an example of how to be people of God’s love.“

After the Eucharist, prayer for the dead was prayed for the late sister Luka and for all the sisters buried in the cemetery. The faithful then continued to pray at the grave of St. Luka, as many in Sarajevo call her.
