On the Sixth Sunday of the year, February 11th, when the calendar commemorates Our Lady of Lourdes, in the monastery church of St. Vincent de Paul of Sisters of Mercy, the 32nd World Day of the Sick was celebrated with a Holy Mass celebration.
The Holy Mass was led by Rev. Štefan Marković, cathedral parish vicar, and seven priests concelebrated. In addition to the faithful who filled the church to the brim, the Sisters of Mercy, led by the provincial superior of the Province of the Divine Mother - Sarajevo, sister M. Vinka Bilješko, and nuns from other societies operating in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina also participated.
In an appropriate sermon, based on the Sunday Gospel, which depicts the encounter between Jesus and the leper (Mk 1:40-45), Rev. Štefan spoke about the phenomenon of physical and spiritual illness. He pointed out that Jesus enters the environment of every human situation, taking upon himself sin, pain and suffering, and heals man. "The leprosy of this leper did not disappear as if by magic, but Jesus took it upon himself. He did the same to the woman who had been bleeding for a long time - He took her illness upon Himself and showed it on the cross. He reaches out to us even today to take our pains, raise us from our sins and heal our life situations", explained rev. Marković and on the example of several saints like St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Jerome pointed out that God always sets out to find man and bring him salvation. In this context, he mentioned the problem of feelings of rejection experienced by the sick, but also by the entire society today. That is why he pointed in a special way to the hand of Jesus, which is stretched out towards everyone.
This, as he said, is the path by which today's Christians should distinguish themselves from others - taking on the imperfections of those who live with them and presenting these sufferings to God, who heals every person.
At the end of the Holy Mass, rev. Mirko Ikić, a priest who celebrates Holy Mass every Thursday in their monastery church of St. Vincent, when there is an all-day worship before the Most Holy. In addition, he thanked the sisters who, traditionally, organized the celebration of the World Day of the Sick and invited everyone to a dinner organized by these nuns.
By the way, the World Day of the Sick was established by Pope John Paul II. And apostolic letter from May 13th 1992, and is celebrated every year on February 11th, on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.
