The rites of the only day of the year when the Church does not celebrate Holy Mass consist of the service of words centered on the Passion of the Lord according to John, then the worship of the Holy Cross, and Holy Communion.

Eight more priests participated in the liturgical rites: Provincial of Bosna Srebrena OFM  Jozo Marinčić,; Secretary General of the BK BiH Msgr. Ivo Tomašević; Msgr. Slađan Ćosić; the prefect of Kaptol of Vrhbosna and the rector of cathedral Msgr. Ante Meštrović; rector of Vrhbosan Theological Seminary venerable  Zdenko Spajić; Secretary of the Province of Bosna Srebrena OFM Damir Pavić, Cathedral parish priest and Sarajevo Dean venerable Mato Majić and the Cardinal's secretary rev. Štefan Marković.

The singing was led by the regens chori of Sarajevo's cathedral, rev. Marko Stanušić, together with Dragan Pavlović, member of the Cathedral Mixed Choir Josip Stadler.

After entering and worshiping the altar in front of which the cross was covered, the scriptural readings which were read by Msgr. Ćosić and OFM Damir were followed by the Passion of the Lord Jesus Christ. The role of Jesus was read by Archbishop Vukšić, the evangelist was Msgr. Tomašević, and other roles were read by rev. Štefan.

The homily was followed by a universal prayer consisting of ten summonses, including one for medical staff, all families, and those infected and deceased by coronavirus.

This was followed by the revelation of the  Jesus' covered cross and presentation with the words: “Here is the wood of the Cross on which the Salvation of the world hung”, followed by the adoration of the Holy cross.

The last part of the rite was the holy communion, the occasion for which they were consecrated the day before on Maundy Thursday, and stored in the side altar.

Prior to the prayer of blessing, Archbishop Vukšić noted that European bishops called on all Catholics to spread the message of hope by burning a candle on the window during Easter vigil, for all those affected by the suffering of the COVID-19 virus, and to strengthen the sense of community within European countries.

The rites of Good Friday were commented by deacon rev. Vedran Ćosić.
