According to tradition, a Holy Mass at the Sarajevo cemetery of St. Joseph, at the Feast of All Saints, was celebrated on November 1st by Archbishop of Vrhbosna, cardinal Vinko Puljić.
Nine priests concelebrated with the Archbishop, among them was the chairman of the Vrhbosna chapter, msgr. Ante Meštrović and Rectors of Theological Seminary in Sarajevo and Vogošća - venerable. Zdenko Spajić and venerable. Michele Capasso, and despite the gloomy and chilly weather, 200 believers participated. Mass singing was led by rev. Marko Stanušić, professor of music at KBF in Sarajevo, with singing of nuns that mostly operate in Sarajevo.
The present, at the beginning, under the tent serving as a place of worship, prepared by the cemetery administration, were welcomed by venerable Mato Majić, Cathedral parish priest and Dean of the Sarajevo Deanery.
The Cardinal based the sermon on Mass readings, especially on the Gospel passage that describes the eight Beatitudes of Jesus.
In a special way, he kept to the first – “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. He said it was a reality that emphasized simplicity of the heart and trust in God, but also warned of poverty as a result of individual and social powerlessness. In this context, he quoted Pope Francis who often points out that “the devil enters the human heart through his pockets”. He also criticized the social level, which often operates according to the principles of a culture of rejection and devaluation of the weaker.
After the Mass, according to tradition, prayer for the dead was prayed at the grave of the great poet Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević, which was this time led by venerable Majić.
