Relics of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus in the Carmel of Stup

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, and the 10th anniversary of the canonization of her parents, their relics were exhibited for veneration in various parishes in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina during May, and on May 17th they also arrived at the Carmel of Sarajevo.

After the reception of the relics of Saints Little Teresa, Ljudevit and Zelia Martin and their ceremonial entry, a Holy Mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić. He was joined by the Apostolic Nuncio in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Francis Assisi Chullikatt, and the Military Bishop, Msgr. Miro Relota, OFM, and about 10 priests led by the parish priest of Stup and the Dean of Sarajevo, Rev. Miroslav Ćavar.

In his homily, Msgr. Vukšić, among other things, emphasized that the saints are a visible form of God's presence, which is also the main reason for the Church to gather around their image, because in their words and deeds, the realization of that primordial image of God in which every human being was created is recognized. He added that the saints have become a living reflection of the rays of His light, and in order to explain the concept of a "living reflection" in more detail, he used the image of the Moon that shines in the darkness, but not with its own light, but transmits the light of the Sun, which is not visible at that moment.

Speaking about the saints whose relics were in front of the altar, he said that, although on different paths in life - parents in marital and family unity, and Little Teresa in the seclusion of a contemplative monastery - they fully realized themselves as Christian believers. "They come to us as tangible proof that holiness is possible in human life, while we often indulge in the delusion that it is reserved only for the chosen and privileged", said the archbishop, and concluded by emphasizing that the example of St. Therese of Lisieux shows that, paradoxically, one can be both small and great at the same time.

Towards the end of the Holy Mass, Nuncio Chullikatt also briefly addressed those present, emphasizing that the saints remain a call to interior renewal, and encouraged everyone to seize the moment of grace and renew their faith.

Before the final blessing, Archbishop Vukšić blessed the roses.

The liturgical celebration was animated by the choir of theologians from the Vrhbosna Theological Seminary Stjepan Hadrović.

Interestingly, with St. Little Teresa, Archdiocese of Vrhbosna is closely connected because the servant of God Josip Stadler, having received a picture of this saint as a gift from her own sister, spread devotion to this saint of God, as well as devotion to the Child Jesus, after whom he named his congregation of nuns, which he founded as the Servants of the Poor of Little Jesus.

Incidentally, from May 14th to 21st, the relics of these saints were in BiH: in the Carmelite Monastery on Lake Buško, the parish of Ledinac, the Carmelite Monastery in Sarajevo, Bistrica near Uskoplje, and the diocesan shrine of Little Teresa in Presnače near Banja Luka.

The organizers of this multi-week prayer event are: the Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus, the Croatian Carmelite Province, the Croatian Bishops' Conference, the Bishops' Conference of BiH, and the Diocese of Subotica.
