Day of the Catholic School Centre Petar Barbarić

We must imitate Jesus' educational methods

Catholic School Centre Petar Barbarić (KŠC) in Travnik solemnly marked School Day on May 19th. The celebration began with a Holy Mass in the seminary church of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, led by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić, followed by a special program.

About 15 priests concelebrated, led by the director of the Travnik KŠC, Rev. Željko Marić.

In his sermon, the Archbishop spoke about the teaching dimension of Jesus Christ, who used various forms of teaching in his appearance before people, especially before his students. "We could even say different methods, but in any case different forms. First of all, by teaching with words, by preaching, as we would usually say. He did it also with prayer, by his example, and he did it with his deeds", said Archbishop Vukšić, making it clear that in a Christian institution such as the KŠC, the basic characteristics of every teacher who appears and acts in it should be recognizable in the four signs and ways of Jesus: teaching, example, prayer, and work.

He also emphasized that everyone who is entrusted with the service of a teacher in various forms of manifestation - church, educational, school, life, family, and any other - are also teachers in the name of Jesus. "In our appearance, we should always seek what his way is and do everything to follow his way and his forms in that appearance and action of a teacher", the Archbishop of Vrhbosna encouraged, among other things.

Rich program

This year's program was permeated with the theme of love and togetherness, with the message: "I came to this world only for love." With a diverse music, dance, recital and drama program, the students showed their talent, creativity and dedication to work. The program was enriched by performances by children from the O. Ante Gabrić Kindergarten, elementary and high school students, as well as a stage performance of Antigona, which reminded of the importance of truth, justice and humanity in today's times.

In addition to church representatives and directors of other KŠC's in BiH, the ceremony was attended by numerous guests from social and political life, including representatives of the Government and Canton of Central Bosnia, the Municipality of Travnik and Novi Travnik, the Consulate of the Republic of Croatia in Vitez, as well as former students and employees of the Centre, as well as representatives of religious communities.

At the beginning, the importance of togetherness, encounter and love as fundamental values on which the work of the Centre has been based since its founding in 1882 was emphasized. The spiritual and educational legacy of the servant of God Petar Barbarić, whose life remains an inspiration to students, teachers and all school employees, was particularly emphasized.

Awarding of awards and addresses

During the program, special mention was made of elementary and high school students who achieved notable results in knowledge, literary and art competitions during this school year, while the most successful participants in the traditional art and literary competition Stazama Petra Barbarića (Via path of Petar Barbarić) were presented with special awards, which were awarded by Monsignor Vukšić.

The Director of the Centre, Rev. Marić presented awards to teachers who have particularly distinguished themselves with their work and contribution to the life of the school: Igor Matanović, Ankica Jukanović and Ante Sučić, while words of gratitude and recognition for their contribution to the work of the Catholic School Centre were addressed to Ljiljana Bajo and Dragan Lovrić on the occasion of their retirement.

The attendees were also addressed by the Minister of Education of the Serbian Autonomous Province of BiH, Bojan Domić, the Mayor of Travnik, Kenan Dautović and Archbishop Tomo, emphasizing the importance of the Centre in educating young generations and its contribution to the educational, cultural and spiritual life of Travnik and BiH.

The program ended with a joint reception and a viewing of the exhibition of art works by students Saška Karadžić and Lorena Đepina.

It should be noted that the celebration of School Day began on May 14th with a performance by school students, while the central ceremony was held on the birthday of the servant of God Petar Barbarić.

How vitally important the Travnik KŠC is, as the successor to the famous Gymnasium, is to Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially to the population of Central Bosnia, is evidenced by the fact that from its founding until its closure and seizure in 1945, 16 148 students received their education here; and after its reconstruction in 1998, more than 2 200 students have completed primary school and more than 1 400 students have graduated from Gymnasium.
