Celebrated memorial day of Bl. Martyrs of Drina

In the church of the Queen of St. Rosary on Banjski Brijeg in Sarajevo, on December 15th, the memorial day of Bl. Drina martyrs.

The Eucharist in the convent church of the Sisters of the Daughters of God's Love was celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Francis Assisi Chullikatt, with the concelebration of the Vicar General of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese, Msgr. Slađan Ćosić, rector of the Church of the Queen of the holy Rosary, rev. Darko Endrich and about 20 priests with the assistance of Slovenian permanent deacon Klemen Štavbar.

At the beginning of the Holy Mass, Msgr. Ćosić gave a welcome speech, first recalling the beatification of the Drina martyrs and pointing out that diplomatic representatives of the countries from which the blessed women came are also participating in this year's celebration. Therefore, he greeted by name: Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia Damijan Sedar, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria Ulrike Harmann, Counselor of the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia Mladen Glavina and Deputy Ambassador of Hungary Agnesi Angyal.

After the proclamation of the gospel in Croatian and Slovenian, in an appropriate sermon the nuncio recalled the five blessed women from the Society of the Daughters of God's Love "who gave a wonderful example of faith, courage, strength and steadfastness in faith, which was the source of their strength to offer their lives to God as a sacrifice for peace in the world and in this beautiful country, which for centuries was tormented by wars and 'drenched' by streams of blood and tears of its inhabitants".

"Although with a certain sadness in our hearts because of the martyrdom to which they were unjustifiably exposed, in this liturgical celebration we proudly mention them, we think with admiration about their fidelity to Christ which they testified with their blood, and we rightly ask for their intercession. If we would take the lives of these servants of God judged only by human eyes, we would easily think that they were in vain. But, looking at them through the eyes of Jesus, we conclude that the lamps that they lit in the Church and the world will never be extinguished", said the nuncio, among other things.

Towards the end of the Holy Mass celebration, Sister Snježna Stjepandić addressed those present on behalf of the Provincial Administration and the Provincial Head sister Gordana Igrec. This was followed by a prayer at the image of Bl. Drina martyrs.

The liturgical singing and playing was led by the professor at the Sarajevo KBF, Rev. Ivan Rako, and the prayer of the faithful was read in Croatian, Hungarian, German and Slovenian.

Let us remind you that on December 15th 1941, five martyred sisters, members of the Society of the Daughters of God's Love, were abducted by the Chetniks from the monastery in Pale near Sarajevo and taken to Goražde. The sisters were killed in the period between December 15th and 23rd "out of hatred for religion" in the territory of eastern Bosnia.

Word about the martyrdom of the five sisters, popularly known as the Drina Martyrs, spread quickly. The archdiocesan process for their beatification was opened in Sarajevo in December 1999, and after its completion, the process continued at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. After the positive results and conclusions of theological and other experts, in January 2011 Pope Benedict XVI approved their beatification.

The Drina martyrs were beatified on September 24th 2011 in Sarajevo. The Holy Mass was celebrated in the Zetra Hall by the then prefect of the Congregation for the Proclamation of Saints, Card. Angelo Amato.
