Celebrated patron of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist

The religious community in Odžak, the only one in the Vrhbosna Archdiocese that has the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist as a patron, celebrated its patron saint on August 29th.

The Eucharist was led by the Dean of the KBF in Sarajevo, rev. Darko Tomašević with the concelebration of the new parish priest and acting Dean of the Dobor Deanery rev. Ilija Orkić and about 20 priests from neighbouring parishes and Sarajevo and Zenica.

In the appropriate sermon rev. Tomašević pointed out that St. John is the only saint to celebrate two birthdays. “With the exception of Christmas and the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of the saints, we celebrate the date of birth only to John the Baptist. For others, we remember the day of their death, but not their birth”, said Dean Darko and reminded that St. John was something special from birth. Asked why this saint deserved to be praised so much by Christ, he said that he was a fearless preacher, a fighter for the truth, a man of fasting and prayer, and very humble.

The Holy Mass celebration was animated by a mixed parish choir.

The parishioners prepared for the patron saint for three days, at the end of each Holy Mass in front of the statue of St. John, litany and prayers for children and the sick were prayed.
