Celebration of the 180th anniversary of the birth and baptism of the servant of God Josip Stadler

The jubilee, 180th, commemoration of the birth and baptism of the Servant of God Josip Stadler, the first archbishop of Vrhbosna, was celebrated on January 24th in his native parish of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Slavonski Brod.

The spiritual program began with the lighting of candles at Stadler's memorial near his birthplace and a prayer led by parish priest Anđelko Cindori. This was followed by a procession through the streets of the city to the Catechetical Centre of the parish of Our Lady of Help, where the postulator of the cause for the beatification of the Servant of God Josip Stadler, Msgr. Pavo Jurišić.

Along with parish priest Cindori and the dean of Slavonski brod Tomislav Ćorluka, six other priests concelebrated. Around 70 Sisters Servants of the Little Jesus (SMI) from three provinces: Sarajevo, Zagreb and Split, participated among the many believers, with their superiors, led by the sister superior of the Society, sister Marija Banić.

As that day was the memorial of St. Francis de Sales, msgr. Jurišić connected the example of that great saint with the life of the first archbishop of Vrhbosna. Emphasizing that Stadler worshiped St. Francis de Sales, he mentioned that he often cited him as a role model in his writings.

"Although they lived at different times and in different circumstances, because St. Francis de Sales, a descendant of a high noble family, who from birth was ‘destined’ to progress in every way, while Stadler was born in a poor family and was orphaned at an early age and was constantly directed to the love and kindness of others, yet they are united by the same love for God and the same concern for the salvation of souls", emphasized Msgr. Jurišić who also pointed out that Stadler was faithful to his pastoral calling, striving to work in the Lord's field by word and deed.

"The Gospel was Stadler's strength, offered for salvation to everyone. It was a focal point that transformed all his work with its supreme laws", said postulator Jurišić, noting that Stadler was also an apostle of love for one's neighbour. He concluded his homily with the words that the Society of SMI Sisters is still alive today as the fruit of Stadler's love for the poor, and with the message that Stadler's example should be a permanent source of inspiration.

At the end of the Holy Mass, which was animated by the large parish choir led by the Ursuline sister Cecilija Kolarić, and those present prayed for the beatification of God’s servant Stadler.

Theatrical presentation of the Father of the Poor

The festive program continued in the Music School, led by sister M. Ljilja Marinčić. The mixed choir of the Music School under the direction of prof. Danijela Božičević premiered the song Strengthen us with Christ's love (Snaži nas Kristovom ljubavlju), for which the lyrics and music were written by rev. Bruno Diklić, a young priest of the Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek, and dedicated it to Josip Stadler. This was followed by a symbolic performance called Stadler. It was performed by members of the Croatian Theater from Travnik under the direction of the director and dramatist Ante Bilić, and in the production of the SMI sisters of the Sarajevo province. Although all amateurs, except for the main actor who played Archbishop Stadler, the young people very skilfully presented Stadler in this modern-choreographed poetic drama, with speech, music, scenography and costumes, from his boyhood days, and then his years as shepherd of the Church of Vrhbosna,

Stadler's birthday - the birthday of the SMI Society

At the end, Mother Superior sister Marija Banić thanked them as well as everyone who participated in the organization of that great event. "For us Servants of the Little Jesus, this is a special day. With the birth of Archbishop Stadler, God also had us in mind, he knew that this humble servant of his would be obedient to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and respond to God's desire to establish a Society that would take care of all those who are especially close to his heart - the little ones and the abandoned. In a way, his birthday is also ours", said sister Banić among other things.

By the way, the SMI sisters, who work in Slavonski Brod, prepared for this jubilee in 2022 with a prayer walk around the parishes of the Slavonski Brod deanery. Together with the faithful, they prayed for the beatification of their founder every 24th of the month in another parish of that deanery. In each parish, sister M. Kristina Adžamić presented the life and work of God's servant Stadler to the faithful.
