Closing session of the First Synod of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese

In the hall of the Priests’ Home in Sarajevo on October 30th, members of the Assembly of the First Synod of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese held their fifth, and last, session to discuss the part of the Working Document prepared by the media expert group.

The meeting, which was attended by 77 members out of 148 appointed, as well as the previous four, began with the prayer, which was led by the Secretary General of the BK BiH, Msgr. Ivo Tomašević. The words of greeting were said by the President of the Synod, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, cardinal Vinko Puljić, who also chaired the session. “Throughout the history of salvation, God sent prophets who conveyed the message of God to man and sent his Son - the Word which became the flesh and dwelt among us”, the cardinal said and reminded that all means of communication should and can serve the mission of Church. He pointed out that communication is learned inside one self, which means listening to and respecting opinions.

The presidency at the fourth session consisted of: Vicar General of VN, Msgr. Slađan Ćosić, Secretary General of the Synod, Rev. Mario Bernadić and the head of the Synodal Commission for the Religious and Pedagogical Area, OFM Stipo Alandžak. Along with them, the moderator was members of the media expert group whose materials were the subject of discussion: Rev. Josip Vajdner, Mr. Brane Vrbić and Msgr. Ivo Tomašević.

Then Rev. Vajdner presented a part of the Working Document prepared by the group he headed, ie numbers 167 to 181. He first pointed out some of the most important documents that the popes disclosed with regard to media issues, as well as those published by BK- BiH and HBK. He then informed the members of the Assembly how much the Synod dealt with the media in the preparatory period and presented information on how it is published in the Vrhbosna Archdiocese: one weekly, one monthly, several periodicals related to each institution. He also noted that the Church also has one radio station. He went on to talk about the Church's presence on the Internet and social networks, and stated that this is an area where additional work needs to be done and the opportunities provided are used. He suggested several concrete ideas that should contribute to a better quality and greater representation of the Church in the media.

A discussion ensued in which the members of the Assembly participated and their interventions will be considered by the members of the Media Commission when they work on the drafting of the final document.

It was also the last session of the Assembly of the First Synod of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese, and each of the five expert groups will jointly draft a document on which members will comment on Saturday, November 20th 2021. It is estimated that the First Synod of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese will be solemnly concluded by a Holy Mass in the Sarajevo Cathedral on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8th 2021.
