Deacon ordination and opening of the synodal walk

During the solemn Eucharist in the Mostar Cathedral on October 30th the Bishop of Mostar-Duvno and apostolic manager of Trebinje-Mrkan, Msgr. Petar Palić gave the Holy Order of Deacons to five candidates and opened the synodal process within the Synod of Bishops about the Synodal Church.

The following were ordained deacons: rev. Nikša Pavlović for the Diocese of Trebinje and Mrkan and the candidates of the Herzegovina Franciscan Province: OFM Franjo Ćorić, OFM Ivan Hrkać, OFM Franjo Markić and OFM Ivan Slišković.

At the beginning, the Bishop greeted the gathered faithful, candidates and their relatives and concelebrants, among whom were: the Provincial of the Franciscan Province of Herzegovina, OFM Miljenko Šteko, and the Vicar General of the Herzegovina Dioceses, rev. Nikola Menalo.

After the candidates were presented for the order of deacons, the bishop delivered a homily. “In front of us are five young men who are no different from their peers. And yet, in their lives and hearts, they felt something unusual and sublime like the prophet Isaiah. They heard the Lord calling them, but they were also aware of their unworthiness”, explained Msgr. Palić addressing the ordained people, and said that they had left a lot, but they would also receive a lot because “we lose nothing in Christ”.

The candidates then expressed their readiness to accept the consecrated refuge, to keep the worship of the hours, and to respect and obey the diocesan bishop and the legitimate religious leader. The Bishop distributed the sacrament of the Holy Order of Deacons to the candidates by the laying of hands and consecration prayer. Then the newly ordained deacons, with the help of their parish priests, put on their liturgical robes and at the end of the rite received the Evangeliary from the bishop’s hands and exchanged peace with him, and then began the service at the altar.

At the end of the Eucharistic celebration, Bishop Petar opened the synodal process. “On October 10th this year, Pope Francis solemnly opened the synodal procession for the whole Church. We are responding to the call and today we are opening a synodal walk in our particular Churches of Mostar-Duvno and Trebinje-Mrkan, hoping to help us discover the importance of communion and the importance of participating in the mission that each of us has in the Church”, said the bishop and explained that, despite the vertical, hierarchical structure of the Church, the Pope insists that the Synod “listens to the questions, concerns and hopes of every Church, people and nation”.

The Holy Mass was animated by the Cathedral Choir Marija under the direction of rev. Dragan Filipović and with organ accompaniment by sister Matea Krešić.
