Deacon ordination in the Sarajevo Cathedral

On Mission Sunday, October 20th, in the Cathedral of Sacred Heart of Jesus in Sarajevo, the Archbishop of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Metropolitan Msgr. Tomo Vukšić ordained one candidate of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese and six of the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena as deacons.

Together with Msgr. Vukšić was the archbishop of Vrhbosna in peace, Cardinal Vinko Puljić and about 40 priests, including the provincial of the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena, OFM Zdravko Dadić, and the secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Javier Camañes-Forés.

Features of service

After the presentation of candidates for the order of deacon, Msgr. Vukšić delivered an appropriate homily in which he pointed out that the deacon's service as already existing in the Church is recorded on the pages of the Holy Scriptures and that the qualities that deacons should have are stated.

"It is said there that they should be serious people, not duplicitous, not loyal to vices or filthy gains. They should have and carry the mystery of faith in a clear conscience. And before they receive this service, the same holy writer asks that the candidates should first be tested and only then, if they prove themselves suitable and if they are without objection, should they perform the service", explained Msgr. Vukšić further expressing his belief that the "seven husbands", as he called the ordained, "are of good repute and full of the Spirit and wisdom".

"We will pray the Lord to look graciously at you who will be consecrated to serve God's holy altars, with the desire to send the Holy Spirit to you so that the gift of His grace will strengthen you for the faithful performance of your service. And may you be saved by: sincere love, intercession for the sick and poor, modesty in governance and complete integrity and observance of spiritual discipline", said Archbishop Tomo, wishing the deacons to always be strong and remain steadfast in Christ.
