On October 16th, the Croatian community in Serbia celebrated the Birthday of count Josip Jelačić with a requiem Holy Mass in the church of St. George in Petrovaradin led by the Bishop of Srijem, Msgr. Đuro Gašparović.
In the appropriate sermon, Msgr. Gašparović pointed out that he presents the Holy Mass for the soul of the Croatian count, who became a member of the Croatian people by birth, and after his baptism a part of the Catholic Church.
“We are also presenting the Holy Mass for the blessing and progress of the Croatian community here in Serbia”, said Msgr. Gašparović pointing out that the count was baptized in the church where this Holy Mass is celebrated.
The Eucharist was attended by the leaders of Novi Sad, which includes Petrovaradin, as well as representatives of the Croatian community in Serbia, Croatian diplomacy in Belgrade and numerous believers from Srijem, as well as Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman.
After the Holy Mass, the count's birthplace was ceremoniously opened, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, also participated. Afterwards, a ceremonial academy was organized in the atrium of the residence of the Bishop of Srijem.
By the way, the Croatian community in the Republic of Serbia celebrates the Birthday of count Josip Jelačić as one of its four official holidays.
