On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the conversion and the 400th anniversary of the canonization of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Archbishop of Vrhbosna cardinal Vinko Puljić, on October 3rd, led a Holy Mass in the parish church dedicated to this saint in the Sarajevo neighbourhood of Grbavica.
On the eve of the Holy Mass, the parish priest father Ante Topić, who concelebrated with several priests from Sarajevo, greeted Cardinal Vinko and the Provincial of the Croatian Province of the Society of Jesus father Dalibor Renić and the gathered faithful. The theologians of the Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary and the theologians of the Herzegovina Franciscan Province assisted.
In his homily, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna reminded that on May 14th 2021, the Holy See, through the Apostolic Penitent, issued a Decree on complete forgiveness of believers, under the usual conditions, who will visit any jubilee church of the Society of Jesus in the world during the Jubilee Year of Ignatius, which lasts from May 20th 2021 to July 31st 2022, while clarifying what complete forgiveness actually means.
“People often don't quite understand what that means. They say, ‘Well, I have confessed, do I need complete forgiveness ?!’ By confessing, however, we heal the sin-wounded soul. And it’s like some kind of soul healing operation. But it also needs to be subdued. This is the postoperative period. Well, that is what the Church gives, under, of course, certain conditions”, the archbishop explained.
After the sermon, OFM Dalibor thanked the Cardinal for celebrating the Holy Mass, but also for following the Jesuits in their efforts to contribute to the Vrhbosna Archdiocese.
The Holy Mass was animated by young musicians from Loyola College with harmonious music and singing.
