In accordance with a long tradition, the solemn Eucharist, on the evening of August 15th, on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Sarajevo area of Stup was celebrated by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna cardinal Vinko Puljić.
He was accompanied by eight priests. After the introductory procession with the votive image of Our Lady, carried by young parishioners in traditional costumes, the gathered faithful, several hundred of them were greeted by the parish priest of Stup, rev. Miroslav Ćavar.
At the beginning of the Holy Mass, the Cardinal wished that “the modern plague of today ceases” and pointed out that “people have once again seen their smallness in the face of God who is almighty”.
In his sermon, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna pointed out that the summer feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has become a favourite among the people. He noted that before, at Christmas time there were more mass gatherings of believers, and today it is more for the Assumption, a period when more people go to the Holy Mass, access the sacraments and penance.
“God wanted it that way. He came through Mary to save us. The Holy Spirit under the heart of Mary created a body for Jesus, the God-Man, who with that body will die and rise and thus bring us salvation. Mary is inseparable from Jesus and he confirmed that at the very hour of death when he gave his mother to the disciple and thus made him the mother of us all”, the cardinal pointed out, emphasizing that then it is also to be expected that the mother gathers her children and intercedes for them.
Speaking about Mary as an advocate, he noted that she is a role model for the faithful, an example and, in the end, a signpost of hope and consolation.
“On this earth, man is seduced and often seeks happiness where there is none, he is disappointed and empty and frustrated because he has not found it”, he said, noting that “we pray to Mary, among other things, that we want to find happiness in the afterlife”.

“Man is a seductive being and that's why he is seduced by all this technique that blurs his view of eternity. It is this reality that blurs the view of eternity. Today we live in a time of ‘inflation of politics’ that suppresses private worries and simply doesn't let you think for yourself”, emphasized the Archbishop of Vrhbosna and repeated the story of the old devil who teaches younger devils how to seduce a man with a simple trick in which people should not be allowed to think.
Speaking about the Feast of the Assumption, he pointed out that we want to rediscover the value of man and see again the dignity he had.
At the end of the sermon he emphasized that no matter how much everything is directed against the Christian spirit and law, man must have a goal, and that is eternity. He encouraged those present to return home full of trust and confidence in God: “Everything on earth is insecure, only God's is safe.”
Before the final blessing, the parish priest thanked all those who participated in the organization of the celebration of the patron saint, and especially Cardinal Puljić for his arrival.
The Holy Mass was animated by the parish youth choir and the band Veritas.
This year, due to technical reasons of the live broadcast of the Holy Mass through Katolički tjednik, there was no procession with lighted candles from the outer altar to Our Lady's Cave, but the Archbishop of Vrhbosna prayed litanies and gave blessings to the faithful gathered at the outer altar.
The central Holy Mass was also broadcasted live by Radio Marija in BiH.
It is worth mentioning that the parishioners were preparing for the celebration of the patron saint with Holy Masses novenas and triduums, and on the feast itself, in addition to the evening, five more Holy Masses were celebrated at 6, 7, 8, 9 (sick) and 11 o'clock. Also, throughout the day, believers and pilgrims had the opportunity to access the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
