On Calvary near Vitez, on September 15th, the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows was solemnly celebrated.
The Eucharist was led by the Archbishop Coadjutor of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić, concelebrating with several priests, among whom was the parish priest of Vitez OFM Velimir Bavrka.
In his homily, Archbishop Vukšić first explained how many different feasts, memorials and commemorations are celebrated in the Catholic calendar throughout the year, and that the most important of them are the feasts of the Lord in which the Church worships God in prayer. He then reminded that the day before, on September 14th, the Church celebrated the Exaltation of the Holy Cross which is honoured as a place of Jesus’ fidelity, love and victory, not suffering. Explaining that the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows was placed one day after that feast, he recalled the seven sorrows of Mary: the prophecy of Simon, the flight to Egypt, the disappearance of the 12-year-old boy Jesus, the encounter on the cross, standing under the cross, Jesus in his mother’s arms and his laying in to the grave. “Therefore, in her intercession, we recommend all your pains and sorrows with the wish that dear God give, and good people help, that all reasons for tears of grief disappear everywhere, that all the lost go back to the right path and for us to be a blessing to each other”, said Msgr. Vukšić.
By the way, this place of prayer in Central Bosnia dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows traditionally gathers a large number of believers and pilgrims from all over the Lašva Valley.
