Međugorje Parish of St. James from August 1st to 6th hosted the 33rd International Youth Prayer Festival - Mladifest. The motto of the meeting, which brought together ten (arch)bishops, hundreds of priests and thousands of young people from about 70 countries of the world, was: Learn from me and you will find peace (Mt 11:28-30).
The youth prayer meeting began in the afternoon with a parade with the flags of more than 70 countries from which the participants came. Then the message of Pope Francis was read by the apostolic visitor with a special role for the parish of Međugorje, Archbishop Msgr. Aldo Cavalli.
The Holy Father invited young people to go to Jesus with open hearts and follow Mary's example. “Trust her, who is the Star of the Sea, a sign of hope on a turbulent sea that leads us to the harbor of peace. She, who knows her Son, will help you to follow him in your relationship with God the Father, in compassion for your neighbors and in the awareness of this what we are called to do: to be children of God. At this moment, in the heart of summer, the Lord invites you to go on vacation with Him, in the most special place that exists, which is your own heart”, it says, among others in the message of the Holy Father, who entrusted the youth to the Virgin Mary and blessed them and recommended himself to their prayers.
The Eucharist was celebrated on the first evening by the Archbishop of Barcelona and the president of the BK of Spain, Cardinal Juan José Omella. Nine (arch)bishops and 473 priests concelebrated. In his sermon, adapted to young people, he spoke about Marian devotions in Spain and reminded that the goal of coming to Međugorje must be reconciliation with God and people.
As on every day of the meeting, in the evening there was worship before the Most Holy.
The second day of Mladifest gathered a large number of believers who mingled with young people on the “Hill of the Apparitions” and participated in the prayer of the rosary and the appropriate exhortation led by parish priest OFM Marinko Šakota and Ivan Dragićević.
During the day there were prayers, catechesis, speeches, testimonies and the rosary. One of the testimonies was given by the assistant bishop of the Kharkiv-Zaporizhia Diocese from Ukraine, Msgr. Jan Sobilo.
The central Holy Mass was led by the General Minister of the Order of Friars Minor, OFM Massimo Fusarelli, with the concelebration of 550 priests. In an appropriate sermon, OFM Massimo raised the importance of the feast of Our Lady of the Angels in the Franciscan order and spoke about the Porciuncula of Assisi.
After the usual prayer-meditative program and testimonies and exhortations, the central evening Holy Mass on the third day was celebrated by the provincial of the Franciscan Province of Herzegovina, OFM Jozo Grbeš, and 564 priests concelebrated.
The Eucharist on the fourth day of the 33rd International Youth Prayer Festival was celebrated by the bishop of Mostar-Duvno and the apostolic administrator of Trebinje-Mrkan, Msgr. Petar Palić, together with 524 other priests. During the Holy Mass, he thanked the parish priest, OFM Marinko, who was in service there until now, and prayed for God’s blessing for the new parish priest, OFM Zvonimir Pavičić. The fourth day of Mladifest ended with the screening of the film by the Cenacolo community entitled “Celebration is for you”.
After the rich program on the last day of Mladifest, the central Eucharist was celebrated on August 5th and led by OFM Marinko, the former parish priest of Međugorje. The apostolic visitor, Msgr. Aldo Cavalli, concelebrated at the Eucharist together with 501 priests. At the end of the Eucharist, OFM Marinko thanked everyone who participated in the organization of Mladifest and invited those present to support the new parish priest of Međugorje.
After the Holy Mass, there was adoration of Jesus in the Most Holy Altar Sacrament, and at the end, representatives of young people from all countries received a rosary as a gift.
Mladifest ended at 5 o'clock on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, August 6th, with a Holy Mass on Križevac.
Let's also mention that during this meeting, rosaries were collected that will be sent to the war-torn Ukraine and will, among other things, be distributed to the veterans there on the front lines of the battlefield.
