Ordained deacons Dino Mustafi and Paulo H. dos Santos Coelho

On Thursday, October 28th, in the Sarajevo Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the deacon ordination of Paul H. dos Santos Coelho and Dino Mustafi, Vrhbosna theologians of the Archdiocesan Missionary International Seminary Redemptoris Mater, was held.

The solemn Holy Mass was led by the Archbishop Coadjutor of Vrhbosna, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić in concelebration with the work manager of the Apostolic Nunciature in BiH, Msgr. Amaury Medina Blanco, the rector of the Redemptoris Mater seminary, rev. Michele Capass, and about 30 other priests, including a large number of members of the Neocatechumenal Way.

After the candidates were presented and elected to the order of deacons and presbyters, and the Christian people expressed their gratitude to God for this act, Msgr. Tomo delivered a homily, expressing his joy about this deacon’s ordination of Dino and Paulo, one from Zadar and the other from Brazil. “With God’s blessing, they chose in the Church of Christ, as members of the Sarajevo Archdiocese on the Neocatechumenal Way, to serve the altar of the Lord and the people of God wherever the Church sends them. The deaconry is the first degree of the sacrament of Holy Orders, and its first distribution, according to the Acts of the Apostles and in accordance with the usual interpretation of that passage of Scripture, was done by the apostles in Jerusalem (…) As it was in the beginning in Jerusalem, this solemn act was done in the same way throughout the history of the Church: by the laying hands of the apostolic successor and by saying the prayer which the Church foresees. Thus, even today, these two of our brothers will be entrusted with a very honorable and responsible ministry in the rank of deaconry to which they will be elevated, and which can only be understood through the eyes of faith”, said the Archbishop Coadjutor of Vrhbosna.

After the sermon, the candidates for ordination expressed their readiness to accept the consecrated celibacy, to keep the worship of the hours, and to respect and obey the diocesan bishop and the lawful head. Archbishop Vukšić distributed the sacrament of the Holy Order of Deacons by laying his hands and consecrating prayer to the candidates for the priesthood. Then the newly ordained deacons, with the help of two priests, put on their official liturgical robes and at the end of the rite received the Evangeliary from the archbishop’s hands, and with him exchanged the sign of peace, and then proceeded to serve at the altar.

By this ordination they accepted, as entrusted to them by the competent authority, the tasks of deacons: to solemnly distribute baptism, to keep and share the Eucharist, to be present at marriage and to bless, to offer offerings to the dying, to read to the faithful the Scriptures, to teach and encourage the people, to lead religious worship and prayer, to administer the sacraments, to lead the rites of funeral and burial.

During the Holy Mass, the singing was animated by members of the Neocatechumenal Way with the support of the faithful gathered in the Sarajevo Cathedral, and in the end words of gratitude for the prayers and every kind of help to the parents, communities the ordainees came from and to God, were said by archbishop Vukšić in Croatian and English.

Let us add, that on this date the Redemptoris Mater seminary based in Vogošća marked the 10th anniversary of its founding. It was founded as one of the 85 seminaries in the world on the Neocatechumenal Way, which expresses its readiness to be a collaborating force for bishops and priests, and by no means something separate from parish pastoral care and diocese.
