On the First Sunday of Advent, December 2nd, in Sarajevo's Cathedral of the Heart of Jesus, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna Vinko cardinal Puljić ordained for deacons three candidates of the Vrhbosna seminary and three candidates of the Franciscan theology of Sarajevo.
Together with the Archbishop, OFM Jozo Marinčić, the Provincial of Bosna Srebrena and 40 other priests, concelebrated.
At the beginning of the mass celebration cardinal Puljić welcomed the associates, the theologians, the relatives of the new deacons, parish priests and the parishioners from the parishes from which new deacons were from and all present believers.

After the candidates were introduced to the rank of deacon, and the Christian believers expressed gratitude to God for this act, the archbishop of Vrhbosna gave a commemorative homily.
In his sermon, the Cardinal first spoke of the liturgical time of advent, which is preparing and the process of the arrival of Christmas. “It is also a growth in faith not just waiting. We have heard in the gospel today of the apocalyptic message of the end of the world. You have heard a message, keep in mind not to be scared but to be aware of what values we hold, that is the sense of advent as well, to a man to awaken, we must be aware of living what we believe”, said the Archbishop, and encouraged the audience to “keep away from the way of life the world lives as if God does not exist.”

He pointed out that crime and corruption rule today and that it is not simple to oppose them with evangelical values. He repeated that we live in a time when the unborn children are killed, and emphasized that it is only for God to decide who will live and who will die.
In the second part of the sermon, he addressed the new deacons emphasizing the importance of the dusk masses in advent that point the people to “truly experience the encounter with Christ.”
“When I was a child, these were 'serious masses', until the liturgical renewal that brought new ways of celebration. I would like to send you, candidates, this message, and this is a prophetic talk of the revelation of God's kingdom”, said Archbishop and pointed out that it is hard to speak of spirituality today in the times of materialism and when the crisis has entered the Church itself.
“I invite you to take up the prophetic ministry, of not only proclaiming the word of God but celibacy, for the kingdom of God you have left married life to proclaim with your life”, he said, and remarked that many brought shame to the Church and urged them therefore to “not betray the prophetic ministry”.
“People believe in words less, but they believe in the witnesses who demonstrate with their example. Dear deacons, by you the God will come to people. Be ready for this,” he emphasized and urged candidates to bravely accept new duties that “are not orders but need”.

“The church is experiencing a collapse, because 'prayers have been kidnapped'. It is needed to bring back the worth of prayer. The Church prays through our mouth and therefore I want you to be supported in your way by the prayer of your close ones, that they may be proud and not ashamed”, he said and pointed that Jesus trusts them and that they should also believe in Jesus who never deceived anyone.
In the end, he reminded them they are not alone, that there was a whole community beside them as well as other believers. After preaching, the candidates expressed the readiness to accept all that they had to, to be ordained.
Cardinal Puljić, by laying his hands and dedicating prayers to priesthood candidates, shared the Sacrament of the Sacred Order of Deaconesses. Then the newly ordained Deacons, with the help of their parish priests wore formal liturgical clothing and at the end of the rites received an Evangelistar from the Archbishop's hands, exchanged the peace with him and then approached the altar service.
In today's decision they accepted, as entrusted to them by the authority, the tasks of the deacon: solemnly give the baptism, preserve and share the Eucharist, in the name of the Church to attend marriages and bless, carry the forgiveness to the dying, read the scriptures to the faithful, teach and encourage the people, preside over the faithful worship and pray, share the sacraments, preside at the funeral and burial ceremony.
For the deacons were ordained: Ivan Dragičević (parish of St. Anthony of Padua, Žepče); Stipica Lešić (parish of St. John the Baptist, Travnik); Adnan Petar Mihael Jašarević (parish of St. Joseph, Sarajevo); OFM Nikola Pejčin (Parish of the Assumption of BDM, Jajce); OFM Franjo Baraban (parish of St. Francis, Rumboci) and OFM Josip Kapetanović (parish of St. Anthony, Lepenica).
Mass was broadcasted directly by Radio Marija BiH. After the Eucharist, joint photographing with the Archbishop and Provincial was organized.
Let us remind; Vrhbosna archdiocese has a total of eight new deacons this year as a month before the deacons have already been ordained: Štefan Marković from Zagreb and rev. Fabijan Štedul from Duga Resa, both the theologians of the Archdiocese's Missionary International Seminary Redemptoris Mater from Vogošća, near Sarajevo.
