Palm Sunday celebrated in Sarajevo's cathedral

Palm Sunday - Passion Sunday and World Youth day were celebrated on April 14th in the cathedral of Sacred Heart in Sarajevo where numerous believers and great number of children gathered.

The Mass celebration was led by archbishop of Vrhbosna, cardinal Vinko Puljić in concelebration with priests and assistance of theologians. Cardinal Puljić blessed the olive branches at the beginning of the Mass and said that the donations gathered from the olive branches are intended for the Missions around the world. After that, as a remembrance of Christ’s entrance to Jerusalem, there was a procession around the Cathedral, where the priests, theologians, nuns and believers carried palm leaves and olive branches.

Then followed solemn singing of Mark’s Gospel. Jesus’ words were sang by cardinal Puljić. Text of the Evangelist was read by priest Jošt Mezek, and other roles were read by Dragan Pavlović, rev. Marko Stanušić and members of the Cathedral mixed choir Josip Stadler under direction of rev. Stanušić.

Gathered believers listened to the proclamation of God’s word thinking about Christ’s Passion and finding in it lessons for life.

Cardinal Puljić in his homily talked about 1990. when he was named bishop of Vrhbosna and remembered that he got a letter from one of his colleagues. “Lord needs you, untie your donkey and carry Jesus through our whole Bosnia and Herzegovina”, wrote the greeting card. Cardinal Vinko said that today, 29 years later he examines his conscience, whether he was worthy of this job as a shepherd of this local Church.

He also invited everyone present to ask themselves: Are we ready to carry Jesus on this land?
