On Sunday, January 17th, the religious community in Gorica, not far from Brčko, celebrated its heavenly patron St. Anthony the Great. The Holy Mass was led by the parish vicar in Dubrave, OFM Ivan Pilić.
Concelebrating with the vicar were the parish priest in Gorice, rev. Ivo Kopić and the parish priests in Ulice and Špionica, OFM Martin Antunović and OFM Pero Baotić.
In the appropriate sermon, OFM Ivan explained that by celebrating the feast of St. Anthony the Great, the believers remember that temptations are an integral part of life and how this saint sold off all his property and retired to solitude in order to live his faith as well as possible.
“God does not ask us to sell everything we have, but he wants us to follow Jesus Christ, that is, to follow his way of salvation. God invites us, not only to keep the commandments, but for our righteousness to be greater so that our life may be light and salt for the world and our neighbours”, said OFM Ivan and made us aware that St. Anthony the Great chose his way of serving God, and that “we should realize the gospel of Jesus in our lives and work.”
The Eucharistic celebration was animated by the parishioners, and about 100 believers participated in the Holy Mass.
Today, the parish of Gorice has 117 families with about 200 believers. Before the last war, it numbered about 2 000 souls. Rev. Kopić emphasizes that the parish also has ministrants and announced the first communion this year, which is a positive impulse for this religious community, the only one in the Vrhbosna Archdiocese that has a “winter” St. Anthony protector.
