Sanctuary of the people, declared a national monument


At its session in Sarajevo on January 13th, the Commission for Preservation of National Monuments of BiH declared, among other things, the sanctuary of the people of St. James of the Marches in the parish of Deževica near Kreševo, as a national monument of BiH.

“National Monument Shrine of St. James of the Marches in Deževice, Kreševo municipality, is a cultural landscape connected with historical, religious, cultural and symbolic connections, including elements of the natural area. The almost scenic location and visually striking element is the cave in which the spring is located. This location was visited by tens of thousands of pilgrims each year before the pandemic began.

The sanctuary dates back to the 15th century and is dedicated to OFM James of the Marches (1391.-1476.), an Italian Franciscan, preacher, writer and vicar of the Bosnian Vicariate from 1435. to 1438.”, writes in the explanation of the Commission.
