On the memorial day of the founder of the Franciscan order, the religious community in the Sarajevo settlement of Dobrinja celebrated its patron saint. The Holy Mass celebration in the evening, on October 4th, was led by the professor of philosophy at the KBF in Split, Rev. Josip Mužić.
With the participation of the believers, among whom were nuns from different societies operating in Sarajevo, 14 priests concelebrated the Holy Mass. Among the others were: the vicar of Bosna Srebrena, OFM Janko Ćuro, the dean of the Sarajevo Deanery, rev. Miroslav Ćavar and the judicial vicar of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna, OFM Šimo Ivelj.
In the appropriate sermon, Rev. Mužić, while talking about the life of St. Francis, highlighted the call to holiness that is placed before all Christ's believers. He illuminated this with a series of facts from the life of the poor man of Assisi, noting that in today's time, marked by secularization, one can come across a "caricature" of this saint "who is presented as a protector of the environment, a representative of dialogue with other religions, as a poet". "However, the most important thing is often left out, which is that St. Francis lived for God. God was his first love", said the preacher, emphasizing the importance of life's response to the call to holiness. On that track, he pointed out that today's situation makes it more difficult to realize this ideal in the laity than in the priestly and religious class, given that the entire society is directed against the family. However, observing the radical commitment to following the poor Christ, which was realized by the founder of the Franciscan order, he pointed out that this is possible and necessary for the Church of all times. In this sense, he mentioned the value of fasting and "enduring suffering for the Lord". "Franjo was not afraid of that time... and he won with love", said rev. Josip, and finally encouraged everyone to "allow God to work in us" every day. "Holiness is 'contagious'. A saintly example draws others to follow... And that is the right solution for the crisis of today's times. Because the crisis in the Church is not solved by a synod or an organizational arrangement, but by sanctity", said Mužić, pointing to the example of St. Francis of Assisi.
At the end of the Holy Mass, which was animated with a song by the choir of theologians of Franciscan theology Fra Nenad Dujić, under the direction of OFM Emanuel Josić, the parish priest OFM Danijel Rajić gave words of thanks. Those present then went to the churchyard where, next to the statue of St. Francis they received a solemn blessing.
By the way, the celebration of the patron saint was preceded by a three-day spiritual preparation when the Holy Masses were celebrated by: OFM Damir Pavić, rev. Sandro Jurešić and rev. Mužić.
Let us also mention that this religious community was canonically founded on May 15th, 1997, by the separation of the settlement from Stup and Novi Grad parishes and placed under the heavenly protection of St. Francis of Assisi. The parish church was consecrated in 2015, and over time it took on the appearance of a harmoniously arranged spiritual sanctuary in this part of Sarajevo.
