St. John the Baptist in Podmilačje


On the feast of birth of St. John the Baptist, on Monday, June 24th, parish and shrine in Podmilačje celebrated their patron, with the traditional gathering of numerous believers-pilgrims from all over BiH as well as from other countries.

Already in the early morning hours, confessions started, followed by Holy Mass at 7:00 and 8:30 AM, while the central Mass Celebration with Prayers for Patients was held at 11:00 AM and was led by OFM Damir Pavić, Secretary of the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena. The concelebrants were the provincial OFM Jozo Marinčić and 20 other priests.

After the Mass celebration, followed folk celebration with music and refreshments.

Shrine of St. John the Baptist in Podmilačje today is considered the largest non-Marian Catholic sanctuary in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many believers also prayed this year for the intercession of the mighty patron saint John, by walking more than 100 kilometres to be at this feast at his sanctuary.

This day is the most important summer celebration. Some call it "summer Christmas."

On the eve of the St. John’s day in Podmilačje, after the worship service, Holy Mass for the sick was led by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, cardinal Vinko Puljić, in concelebration with 15 priests.

It is known that many pilgrims from various parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and other European countries have come to this shrine since ancient times. That's how it was this year as well. According to the words of parish priest Karadža, more than 100,000 pilgrims have gone through the shrine in two days.
