The 28th anniversary of the martyrdom of sister Danka Jurčević was marked


On the feast of the Holy Archangels – Michael, Gabriel and Raphael on Sunday, September 29th, the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Kakanj commemorated the patron of the police St. Michael as well as the 28th sad anniversary of the murder and martyrdom of sister Danka Jurčević.

The Holy Mass celebration was led by the parish priest of Kakanj, rev. Ivica Mršo in concelebration with the teacher at the boarding school of the Sarajevo KŠC Sv. Josip, rev. Darko Endrich. The Eucharistic celebration was attended by representatives of the army and the police, the family of sister Danka, members of the Society of Sisters of the Daughters of God's Love and the faithful of Kakanj and surrounding parishes, reports the Facebook page of the Franciscan Monastery of Kraljeva Sutjeska.

At the beginning of his sermon, Rev. Mršo emphasized the role of angels that are encountered throughout the Bible and the history of salvation. He especially emphasized the patron saint of the police and the army, Archangel Michael.

He also pointed out the link between the martyrdom of sister Danka and Bl. Drina martyrs. "Today we remember the martyrs: girls, women and mothers in a special way", invited rev. Mršo.

After the Eucharist, the faithful visited the place of Sister Danka's murder, where they said a prayer for the dead. Nuns, the family of the Kakanj martyr and priests eventually visited the city cemetery where she was buried.

Every fifteenth day of the month, Kakanj parish introduces devotion through the prayer of the litany with the Drina martyrs, during which they will also pray for sister Danka in a special way.

We remind you that sister Danka Jurčević was born on January 29th 1950 in Jardol, parish and municipality of Vitez to parents Jozo and Lucija, born Frljić. She took her religious vows for life in Zagreb on August 15th, 1970, in the Society of Sisters of the Daughters of God's love. She served in Kakanj, Pula, Zapolje, Sarajevo, Derventa and again in Kakanj, where she was brutally murdered on September 30th, 1996, next to the parish Caritas building, near the parish church. By all accounts, the murder was pre-planned and carried out with eight stab wounds and cuts with a knife. The archbishop of Vrhbosna in peac,e cardinal Vinko Puljić, during the funeral rites, which were attended by about 8 000 believers, called sister Danka "our new martyr".
