The solemn vigil service on the Easter night on April 20th in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was led by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna cardinal Vinko Puljić.
In concelebration were the apostolic nuncio in BiH Msgr. Luigi Pezzuto and 15 priests. The wake was attended by the metropolitan of Dabrobosna, Hrizostom, with his escort.
At the beginning of the wake, the cardinal blessed the fire on the cathedral staircase, then carved the cross in the Easter candle and the first and last letter of the Greek alphabet - the alpha and the omega that signifies the Christ.
Then on the sides and in the middle of the cross, in which the numbers of the year 2019. are, he put five grains of frankincense marking five wounds of the crucified Christ. After burning and spreading the frankincense on the Easter candle, the symbol of Christ, the light of the world illuminating the darkness, the Easter candle was carried through the cathedral, placed on a candlestick and frankincense was spread.
Then rev. Štefan Marković, Cardinal’s secretary, sang the Easter Prayer.
The present believers then listened to three Old Testament readings, and occasional psalms were also sung.
Then followed the solemn singing of the Glory while everyone stood, the ringing of the bells, and the playing of the organ that had been “silenced” since Holy Thursday.
Then the great news of the resurrection of Christ was said, after which cardinal Puljić sang Hallelujah, and then he was joined by the choir and the present believers. In the end, the gospel was announced, which, from the quill of St. Luke tells of the women who went to anoint Jesus’ body and found an empty tomb.
The sermon was sent by the cardinal, and then he blessed the baptismal font and with the holy water he sprinkled the present in memory of baptism of each individual Christian. The Mass continued with the Eucharistic service.
The ceremonies were directed by Msgr. Tomo Knežević, and liturgical singing was animated by the Theologians choir under the guidance of rev. Marko Stanušić.
