Homeland War Remembrance Day

The people of Posavina gathered again on October 6th to mark the 28th anniversary of the fall of Bosanski Brod and most of Bosnian Posavina, which led to the exodus of the Croat and Bosniak people of the area.

Organized by the Association of Volunteers and Veterans of the 101st Bosanski Brod Brigade of Slavonski Brod and the Coordination of Associations Originating from the Homeland War of Brod-Posavina County, the first part of the program began in the morning with a visit to memorials and local cemeteries in Bosanski Brod and surrounding villages.

Holy Mass followed in the parish church of St. Elijah the Prophet in Bosanski brod, led by the parish priest, rev. Antonio Čutura.

In his sermon, rev. Čutura pointed out the central point of the Christian faith, which is the resurrection of Christ, and said “if Christ had not been resurrected, all human efforts, gatherings in the cemetery, lighting candles, carrying flowers would have been in vain.” He encouraged those present to never forget the fallen veterans.

The singing was animated by the dean of the Derventa deanery and the parish priest in Koraće, venerable OFM Ivan Marić.

The second part of the program was held in Slavonski Brod by laying wreaths and lighting candles at the memorial to the fallen and missing veterans.

The event was held in compliance with all epidemiological measures, and the traditional laying of candles along the Sava River in memory of the 2,000 fallen soldiers, was not organised.
