On the Third Sunday of Advent, December 11th, the memorial day of Bl. Drina martyrs and the first Eucharist was served in the church dedicated to the blessed women who were killed by Chetniks in 1941 out of hatred for religion.
Holy Mass celebration in the still unbuilt church dedicated to the Bl. Drina Martyrs, which is located next to the Government Building of the Bosnian-Podrinje Canton, was led by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Vrhbosna and the Apostolic Administrator of the Military Ordinariate in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Tomo Vukšić. In concelebration with him were five priests, among whom was the parish manager of the Goražde religious community dedicated to St. Dominic, rev. Josip Tadić.
In the appropriate sermon, Msgr. Vukšić first thanked the arriving pilgrims who sent their prayers to God through the intercession of Bl. Drina martyrs. He further spoke about the time of Advent when believers prepare for Christmas in a special way. Then he explained that during the Holy Mass readings during Advent, among others, two figures dominate: St. John the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. He underlined that these are two saintly characters from the beginning of the Christian history of salvation and spoke about them. Ending the homily, he spoke about the life of Blessed martyrs of Drina, pointing out that they are an example and inspiration, and asked the Lord to bless all the people of Goražde and participants of the Holy Mass “so that goodness, nobility, simplicity, modesty, conversion and holiness may grow here in this city and everywhere we pass”.
At the end of the Holy Mass, the parish priest addressed those present, emphasizing that “this is a historic moment for the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna, the Society of Sisters of the Daughters of God’s Love, the parish of St. Dominic, the city of Goražde and the Bosnian-Podrinje Canton”. “I am especially praying for you who come from far away: Zagreb, Novi Travnik, Vitez, Orašje, Lovnica, Sarajevo, Kreševo, Fojnica, Tuzla. During the Holy Mass, I prayed for all the people who built themselves in this church”, rev. Josip said emphasizing that there is still work to be done regarding the construction of the place of worship, and he especially thanked the sisters, priests and pilgrims, and especially the sisters from Banjski Brijeg in Sarajevo who sewed and donated the chasuble for the new church.
Let us remind that the Drina Martyrs are five sisters of the Daughters of God's Love, who were killed by the Chetniks out of hatred for religion in 1941 in the territory of eastern Bosnia, after they were abducted from the monastery in Pale on December 11th. Their memorial day is celebrated on December 15th, when, after a 65-kilometer hike and attempted rape, they were killed and thrown into the Drina river.
The blessed Martyrs of Drina were beatified in 2011 in Sarajevo.
