On the 4th Lent Sunday, March 31st, in Sarajevo’s village Slatina, 129th anniversary of the death of the sister Luka Liengitz (Lingic) was marked.
On this occasion, a Mass was celebrated on the sister’s graveyard in Betanija that was led by the canon Dr. Darko Tomašević, dean of the Catholic University of Theology of the University of Sarajevo, with concelebration of rev. Žarko Vujica, parish priest of St. Peter and Paul parish in Kakanj.
In his sermon venerable Tomašević, connected the message of the Mass readings, in which the Father's love for the prodigal son, with the life of sister Luka, who with the love of the Heart of Jesus, recognized the source of her joy and happiness, especially in the difficulties she faced.
Numerous Sisters of the Daughters of God's Love (sister Luka’s congregation) participated in the Mass celebration. They came from: Kakanj, Travnik, Novi Travnik, Bistrica near Uskoplje and, of course, from Sarajevo.
Sister Luka, although an Austrian, had readily accepted her arrival to Sarajevo, to her an unknown city, unknown people, customs, an unknown language. Yet she understood everything. And they all understood her because she spoke in the language of love. The then students of the Institute of St. Joseph, the Sarajevo poor people and all those who passed through the doors of the Institute, really loved her. They continued to love her after her premature death. She died at the age of 30.
Many today, regardless of national and religious affiliation, come to her grave, pray, light candles and thank. It is seen through countless handwritten pieces of paper that visitors leave on her grave. This is confirmed also by today's large number of visitors.
After the Holy Mass, all of them together prayed a prayer for the dead for the late sister Luka and for all the sisters buried in that cemetery.
