On March 19th, Bugojno marked the 25th anniversary of the exchange and liberation of the Croats from Bugojno war camp.
Marking the 25th anniversary of the exchange of Bugojno detainees from the BiH Army camp began with the laying of wreaths and candle lighting at the Sultanovići graveyard. The wreaths were laid by members of families of missing and killed defenders, members of the associations that came out of the “Homeland War”, representatives of the authorities, political parties and the armed forces of BiH.
Prayers at the memorial in the Sultanovići cemetery were led by parish priest of Bugojno, OFM Hrvoje Radić.
Mass in the parish church of St. Anthony was led by OFM Mario Plavčić, parish priest in Bihać. During his sermon, OFM Mario emphasized the importance of preserving the remembrance of the deceased and how they should always have a special place in our hearts.
Let us recall; at the end of July 1993., the forces of the BiH Army took over the control of Bugojno, and many Croats were killed then, forced out of their homes and their properties were stolen and destroyed. At that time a (concentration) camp was formed at the NK Iskra stadium where soldiers of HVO were imprisoned and tortured. From there, 23 Croats were taken and 19 of them are still missing. Six persons were trialled in front of the courts of BiH for crimes committed. However, the worst concern of Croats of Bugojno is that the ones most responsible for crimes and camp are still free to walk around Bugojno. They hope the judiciary will finally reactivate the actions against the Mayor of Bugojno in war times, Dževad Mlaćo, as the most responsible one. They also hope to finally find out the destiny of the missing people, so they can be buried with dignity. They also expect greater attention from Croatian political parties for Croats of Bugojno so they won’t constantly feel forgotten or “sold”.
