Christian prayer for the dead is not defiance

Organized by the Department of the Croatian National Assembly for the Second World War and the post-war period, the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of All Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes - Nazism, Fascism and Communism - was marked on August 21st at the Peace Cemetery in Bili near Mostar.

Holy Mass at the cemetery, which territorially belongs to the parish of Goranci, was led by the Bishop of Mostar-Duvno and the Apostolic Administrator of Trebinje-Mrkan, Msgr. Petar Palić, concelebrating with about a dozen priests.

In his homily, Bishop Palić recalled the words of Hiram Warren Johnson (1866-1945), an American politician and governor of California, who said that the first victim of the war was the truth. “In order to be one step closer to the truth, in 2008 the European Parliament passed a Resolution calling on all its members to mark the day of remembrance for the victims of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. In this context, the Peace Cemetery project is a noble work”, said Bishop Petar, encouraging those present to be better people, better Christians, more committed to peace, justice, forgiveness and truth.

During the Eucharist, the bishop blessed 342 crosses for victims from the area of the Čitluk municipality.

Let us remind you that the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of All Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes has been celebrated at this location since 2013.
