Day of the Catholic Faculty of Theology

On the day of St. Luke, October 18th, the Catholic Faculty of Theology of the University of Sarajevo celebrated its heavenly patron with a Eucharistic celebration and a solemn academy.

Holy Mass in the seminary church of St. Cyril and Methodius, which is located within the building, was celebrated by the great chancellor of this high education institution, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Metropolitan Msgr. Tomo Vukšić. There were about 30 priests in the concelebration, including: the new dean of the KBF, Rev. Mario Bernadić, rector of the Vrhbosna Theological Seminary (VBS), rev. Zdenko Spajić and the new secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Msgr. Javier Camañes-Forés.

Dr. Bernadić greeted those present at the beginning and pointed out that it is difficult to imagine a better patron for a Catholic higher education institution than the doctor and scholar St. Luke, one of those who knew how to "reconcile the spiritual and the material" and for whom, in his writing work, in which he had no personal ambitions, man came first.

In the appropriate sermon, Msgr. Vukšić proposed several unknown thoughts of the Christian writer from the 11th century, which is about St. Luke, who among other things, pointed out that "he is a theologian who knows the rules of history and salvation in it, especially those of his time". Archbishop Vukšić underlined that Luka was an intellectual, thinker and writer, whose knowledge served to be a witness of Jesus Christ and a herald of the Good News.

"Luka was a serious theologian who put his knowledge entirely at the service of pastoral work, testimony and proclamation. Theology grows out of the Revelation of God, but it is at the service of personal faith and emerges from it. Faith is not acquired by learning knowledge, but by listening to the Word of God (Romans 10:17) and is nourished by following Jesus Christ and the example of the saints", said the archbishop and underlined that it is necessary for everyone, especially students, candidates for the priesthood and professors at KBF, always to be aware of that.

The liturgical celebration was animated by the VBS theological choir.

After the Eucharist, there was a reception in the Paul VI Hall with a formal academy that began with the student anthem Gaudemaus igitur performed by the VBS theology choir. At the beginning, Dr. Bernadić presented the work of KBF in the past year, highlighting numerous different projects, scientific meetings and several valuable books.

Thus, among other things, he mentioned the international scientific symposium Theology of Priesthood - the identity of priests in the spirit of synodality of the Church, which was organized at the KBF, and the book published by this institution Il servo di Dio Josip Staler, primo archivescovo di Vrhbosna, authored by Dr. rev. Milenko Krešić. He then presented on the mobility of students and academic and non-academic staff of KBF as part of various projects and training programs. In particular, he pointed out that last year, the seventh generation of participants of the master's course Interreligious Studies and Peacebuilding, which is jointly organized and carried out by the KBF, the Faculty of Islamic Sciences and the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, was enrolled.

Then the audience was briefly addressed by Msgr. Vukšić in the role of the great chancellor of KBF and on behalf of the rector of the University of Sarajevo Dr. Tamara Karača Beljak.

After the welcoming speeches, an apropriate lecture on the topic of the Church serving the world was held by Dr. Rev. Ljubo Zadrić. The purpose of the lecture was to bring closer the complex relationship between the Church and the world, that is, the orientation of the Church towards the world with a specific goal: how can it serve the world?

This was followed by a musical performance and the promotion of the new masters of theology: Kristijan Krišto, Roberta Josipović and Gabrijel Pavlović. The dean's award was given to Nikolina Jukić for the best achievement in the previous academic year with an average of 9.75.

The academy ended as it began - with the performance of the VBS theology under the leadership of Dr. rev. Ivano Rako, God is my Shepherd by Antonino Dvořák.
