Day of the Sarajevo’s Province of the Sisters of the SMI

Holy Mass celebration on May 9th, on the occasion of the Day of the Province and the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters the Servants of the Little Jesus on Stadler's Dolorozi in Čardak, was led by the parish priest in Radunice, rev. Ilija Orkić.

The ceremony began at the sister cemetery in Dolorozi, where about 40 sisters gathered, led by the Supreme Head of the Society, sister M. Marija Banić, and the Provincial Head, sister M. Ana Marija Kesten. Three priests also participated: the parish priest of Čardak, rev. Pavo Kopić, rev. Orkić and the regens chori of the Sarajevo Cathedral, rev. Marko Stanušić.

First, the Provincial Superior, Sr. M. Ana Marija Kesten, encouraged the sisters to think about valuing the victim in everyday life and about the importance of nurturing the heritage of the Society.

Then, those present prayed the prayer of the faithful in the form of thanksgiving to God for the deceased sisters who came first and left a mark on the economy of the Society of Sisters of the SMI - Dolorozi. This was followed by the laying of candles on the graves of the sisters and at the cross. At the end, a prayer was said to the Divine Child Jesus, after which the parish priest Kopić prayed for the deceased.

Then the Holy Mass was led by rev. Orkić, in concelebration with rev. Kopić, dean of the Dobor deanery and parish priest in Odžak, venerable Jakov Filipović and the parish vicar from Odžak, rev. Ivan Dragičević.

In the appropriate sermon, rev. Ilija called for reflection on the faith, which is to be observed through the daily doing of small things, joy and smiles. He stressed that faith is an important thing in life because it gives graces as an “infusion”. Since 2021. is dedicated to St. Joseph, he encouraged reflection on faith in the life of that saint. He stated that it was not easy for Josip, Marija, or the founder of the SMI sisters, the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna, Josip Stadler. “All three had great faith in God, surrender to God’s will, and trust in God’s providence. Stadler - a man of deep faith, sends the sisters in the ‘wasteland’ to the field of St. Philomena, and then to Dolorozi. He sent nuns to bring peace and offer joy and hope to the people of this area”, said rev. Ilija and finally emphasized the importance of practice and pointed out that it is necessary to practice in something. “But it is very important to see what we are training in. Namely, if someone practices complaining, anger, gossip or prayer, communion, love, then he will be like that because what we practice, we become”, he said, encouraging the sisters not to be afraid for their future because it is true what the servant of God, Archbishop Stadler, wrote: “God has given, gives and will give!”

At the end of the Eucharist, Niko Išić, a believer from the Čardak parish, testified about the activities of the sisters in Čardak.

The Holy Mass was followed by refreshments, followed by a spiritual-prayer program in the parish church prepared by the junior sisters and candidates led by their educators. The appropriate word was given by the Supreme Head sister M. Marija Banić, emphasizing that every sister in the community is a gift to each other and encouraged them to accept this gift and be grateful to God for it.

The junior and candidate sisters performed the recitation of Apostol Bosne (Apostle of Bosnia), followed by a video Stadlerove posavske miljenice, Polje Sv. Filomene i Doloroza u Čardaku (Stadler's Posavina favorites, Field of St. Philomena and Dolorozi in Čardak), which shows the history of the activities of the SMI sisters in Čardak through three periods: from their arrival in 1901. to 1949., when the communist authorities took away their monastery; from 1972. to 1992. when the sisters were expelled again and the convent and church were demolished, and from 2006. until today.

After that, words of thanks were sent by the Provincial Superior, sister M. Ana Marija.

At the end of the gathering, the sisters headed to Kornica, where they visited the branch church dedicated to St. Joseph the Worker and the ethno village of Kornica.
