The holiest part of the liturgical year began with the Sunday of the Passion of the Lord - Palm Sunday, March 28th. The Eucharist in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was led by the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, cardinal Vinko Puljić together with the Archbishop Coadjutor Msgr. Tomo Vukšić.
Along with the archbishops, six priests concelebrated, among whom were the Vicar General of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese, Msgr. Slađan Ćosić and the cathedral parish priest and dean of the Sarajevo deanery, venerable Mato Majić.
At the beginning, a procession was organized from the altar to the entrance door of the cathedral, where the Cardinal greeted the missionaries and the present believers. He then reminded what Palm Sunday represents and blessed the olive branches that were distributed by those present.
After the Holy Mass readings in the proclamation of the Passion of the Lord according to Mark, the role of Jesus was played by cardinal Puljić, the reader was his personal secretary, rev. Fabijan Štedul, and members of the cathedral mixed choir Josip Stadler from Sarajevo were in charge of other roles.
Then followed a homily in which the Cardinal emphasized that we were all in Jerusalem in our thoughts during the singing of the Passion and pointed out a strange phenomenon in which the people, who had seen the king in Jesus a few days earlier and solemnly welcomed him, suddenly changed their minds and began shouting “crucify him”.
“It is this populism, this collective consciousness. God works with each person individually. It is very dangerous for a person to lose his judgment and personal conclusions”, said the Cardinal and concluded that the Gospel teaches that one should always seek security in those things that make a person closer to God. He then mentioned that in the last issue of Katolički tjednik he had read a beautiful text by OFM Tomislav Pervan in which he reflected on human insecurities during the pandemic. Following this, the archbishop wondered where today's man lays down his security and offered the answer that it was no longer a weapon or money, as the coronavirus showed.
“Man is blocked by the fear of death, but Jesus gives one security, accepts the cross with dignity and dies. He, as the God-Man, did not hide his human dimensions. And he certainly showed all his humanity in the Garden of Gethsemane. He accepts such terrible humiliation and dies”, said the Archbishop, analyzing throughout history how many did not want to accept Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and explained how a person feels bad if he does something with love and torment, and then it proves futile.
The sermon ended with a wish that “we are not to be deceived by the spirit of the times, but that we should boldly bear witness and be faithful disciples of Christ”.
Let us recall that on Palm Sunday, when Christians commemorate Jesus' solemn entry into Jerusalem, which marked the beginning of the completion of the mystery of the salvation of mankind, the World Youth Day, which was established in 1986. by St. John Paul II. Due to the epidemiological measures in Sarajevo Canton, fewer young people and children were visible at the Holy Mass.
