Presentation of the books of chronicles of cardinal Puljić

In the Vrhbosna theology seminary in Sarajevo, on February 7th, the triptych publication of Chronicles of Vinko cardinal Puljić who is in his service of the archbishop of Vrhbosna for quarter of a century, were presented.

In the hall of Paul VI, which was almost full to the last place, the books titled according to the theological virtues - Faith, Hope and Love, were presented by: the military bishop in BiH rev. Tomo Vukšić, the Provincial of Croatian Dominicans OFM Slavko Slišković and former cardinal secretary, and now a student in Rome rev. Bojan Ivešić.

The present guests, including the Apostolic Nuncio in BiH, Msgr. Luigi Pezzuto, Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to BiH, Ivan Del Vechio, numerous professors, nuns and theologians, were initially welcomed by the rector of the Vrhbosna theology seminary, rev. Josip Knežević, who moderated the program.

He read the short biographies of the presenters, and then let the military bishop to take over. Rev. Tomo initially noted that three chronicle books that follow the period from January 1991. to January 2016. were prepared by prof. Franjo Marić and rev. Ivešić. He pointed out that this work was the first of this kind among the printed editions of the Church in Croats, although bishops regularly chronicle and give the same to the public in their official newspapers.

He estimated that it was an “unusual and interesting publication” that was actually a “verbalized photo of the events”. “It is not a memoir text, but a chronicle”, said bishop Vukšić, underlining the reliability of the information they bring because they do not answer the question WHY, but WHAT and WHEN. Therefore, he argued that chronicle, although difficult to read, is a precious foundation for historians that does not lack interesting events and people. He concludes by pointing out that it is actually a chronicle of the Catholic shepherd's soul, in which the faith is recognized and above all, the hope of its “main character”.

OFM Slavko continued, by explaining the book triptych which includes: the first volume of 1991-1999; the second from 2000 to 2009 and the third from 2010 to 2016. He noted that the chronicle was not recorded by the archbishop but his secretaries. “There will probably be different comments of the meetings and people with whom the Cardinal

met but often could not choose”, said OFM Slavko by pointing to the mismatch of the style which is understandable because the information was written by different persons, and the circumstances in which the chronicles were written. Citing some events, he mentioned a difficult war period (moving of the theology), as well as the beautiful contents like the dates of the selection of two popes. He pointed out that this work would make it easier for historians to evaluate and perceive a period, especially in a region like BiH where there is “the absence of time” in certain historical eras. In conclusion, in a humorous tone he said that this chronicle was not finished, but that it should continue with the headlines of which the fourth volume could be called “moderation”.

Third presenter, at the same time with prof. Marić, the organizer of the three-part work, rev. Ivešić, presented the course of the project of these chronicles which began in 2016. and was completed in two years. He thanked everyone who contributed in any way to publishing of this book, and in a special way he thanked rev. Branko Jurić for collecting the Chronicles, to the Media Center of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese for graphic design, Caritas of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese for Helping in Photo Processing, Tomislav Hačko for Designing Covers, the lectors and correctors s. Terezija Antunović, s. Elvira Lovrić and Prof. Zrinka Mandurić and all Archbishop's Secretaries.

Finally, cardinal Vinko addressed the audience, who also thanked everyone involved in the making of chronicles, and especially to those who wrote them: the ones who started them: Msgr. Mato Zovkić and Msgr. Ivo Tomašević, and to all those who continued: Franjo Tomašević, Josip Grubišić, Željko Marić, Dubravko Turalija, Josip Tadić, Dragan Jurić, Josip Knežević, Oliver Jurišić, Davor Topić, Slaviša Stavnjak, Branko Jurić and Bojan Ivešić ...

“When I read some parts I got goose bumps for all that we lived through... some scars remained. This chronicle, besides other things, is a sure and terrible reminder of all this”, the Cardinal said intimately, concluding: “It's not my persona that is important but the service I did”.

The event finished with a get-together at the dining room of the Vrhbosna theology seminary.
