Promotion of a book about blessed Alojzije Stepinac

On Tuesday, February 20th in the organisation of Vrhbosna's theology seminary in Sarajevo, a book; Communist persecution and martyrdom of blessed Alojzije Stepinac, by the author msgr. Dr. Juraj Batelja, the postulator of the cause, was promoted.

The book promotion was held in the hall Paul VI., where among others, were cardinal Vinko Puljić, the Archbishop of Vrhbosna; msgr. Luigi Pezzuto, Apostolic nuncio in BiH; msgr. Ratko Perić, bishop of Mostar-Duvno and the apostolic manager of Trebinje-Mrkan; msgr. Marko Semren, auxiliary bishop of Banja Luka, great number of priests, nuns, monks, theologians and laypeople.

Program was opened with a musical performance and a greeting from rev. Josip Knežević, rector of Vrhbosna's theological seminary, who at the same time presented the book author and the postulator of the cause of bl. Stepinac, msgr. Juraj Batelja. Alongside the author, msgr. Perić also spoke about the book.

He named his presentation When you hit it the shepherd, the sheep will run away. He spoke about the state of the Church in Croats that was in the communist era left without a shepherd, and he specifically reflected on the systematically poisoning of cardinal Stepinac while he was in jail, as well as on the dissection that followed his death, pointing out the „path“ of the Cardinal's heart.

Then followed the presentation from msgr. Batelja who through the multimedia presentation brought a great number of photographs, especially of cardinal Stepinac in BiH places and towns as well as a number of important documents that were censored.

He finished his presentation by quoting blessed Stepinac: „I can leave my bones in Krašić, I have nothing against that if that is the will of God, but if they think that with these measures they can break the Catholic Church, they are big naives, because the Catholic Church does not lay on cardinal Stepinac or any other man, but on Jesus Christ, who is replaced on earth by Peter, Holy Father.“

At the end, followed short addressing with strong messages by cardinal Puljić and msgr. Pezzuto.

Nuncio Pezzuto revealed that he read Stepinac's resume when he was 16 years old. „There lies my knowing of the Church in the Balkans as a martyr Church. With my 16 years I never could dream that I would become a nuncio in this martyr Church in the Balkans. My message to you, members of this persecuted Church in the Balkans – I don't mean only Stepinac but others as well on different positions – you, we must continue this thorough tradition that we inherited from those sacred martyrs“, said the Apostolic nuncio.

Archbishop Vinko remembered the moment cardinal Stepinac was declared blessed in Marija Bistrica, when holy pope John Paul II. said that blessed Alojzije Stepinac is a compass to Catholics of Church in Croats. „For me a true experience was when I was a boy in school in 1953, after Alojzije Stepinac was named a cardinal, and I experienced hazing so I cried in front of my father who consoled me saying that we must endure. Truly, he was a compass – when I came to Zagreb – I went to his grave because I vowed – I have to meet that man“, concluded cardinal Puljić.

Program ended with a music performance.
