The octave for Christian unity finished

On the last day of the praying octave for Christian Unity, on January 25th, in the Orthodox cathedral of the Birth of the Holy Mother of God in Sarajevo, a Peace prayer, reading sermon and brief prayers for the Christian’s needs was held. Appropriate sermon was held Vinko Puljić, the cardinal of Archdiocese of Vrhbosna.

On the closing day of the praying octave for Christians’ unity in the Orthodox cathedral, a great number of believers, priests - both Catholic and Orthodox, nuns and monks gathered. At prayer, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna, together with cardinal Puljić, among others, were Msgr. Luka Tunjić, General Vicar of the Archdiocese, Msgr. Ivo Tomašević, secretary of the Bishops' Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina and rev. Mladen Kalfić, Chancellor of the Archdiocese.

After reading the liturgical readings and after the bishop of Dabrobosna, Hrizostom, proclaimed the Gospel, Archbishop Puljić said sermon and thanked first of all to all who participated in the organization and realization of this year's Praying octave. “’That they may all be one, as You, Father, in Me and I in You; that they so may be one in Us’. It was Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper; it is his will and a farewell word. It commits us. We do not create unity based on our abilities and craftsmanship, but pray that God's reality becomes our reality. Therefore, we pray that God, the one and the three, that the Holy Trinity and all of us, different and divided, draw us to Himself with His divine power, and that with His love we be joined”, emphasized cardinal Puljić.

“This praying octave was prepared by Christians in Indonesia. Similarly to their experience, Christians today face the greed in the world, with violence, exclusivity, exploitation, poverty, public opinion pollution, hunger and human trafficking (...) It is necessary to show the source of evil and seek light and salvation and to carry the hope and face all these challenges”, said the Archbishop of Vrhbosna.

“In the Trinity, the source of unity, let us be led by Jesus, who is the light of the world! Let us see the paths that lead us to each other, and may the Holy Spirit warm our hearts so that the love of God radiates in our attitudes and works, to truly testify our connection in Christ, in his word which is the source of Christian life”, said cardinal Puljić.

After Praying for Peace, Mr. Hrizostom also addressed the guests. “It is truly wonderful and beautiful to see us together in prayer, to stand in prayer before the One and Only our God and Lord, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Is there anything more beautiful than this, that we, the Christians of Sarajevo, Orthodox and Roman Catholics are witnessing our communion and our prayer for the desired unity of Christians?! This really should be, not just a good example, but also encouragement for all people of Sarajevo and the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, said the metropolitan of Dabrobosna.

The praying encounter was animated with a harmonious, common a capella singing by the Serbian singing company Sloga, directed by Stefan Mojsilović.
