Prayer Octave for the Unity of Christians

On the last day of the Prayer Octave for the Unity of Christians, on January 25th, in the evening, the Prayer for the Unity of Christians, a reading service and a liturgy, were held at the Church of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sarajevo. Archbishop of Vrhbosna cardinal Vinko Puljić gave an appropriate sermon.

On the closing day of the Prayer Octave for the Unity of Christians, a large number of believers, priests, both Orthodox and Catholic, as well as monks, nuns and theologians, gathered in the Church of the Orthodox cathedral.

After reading the liturgical readings and after Orthodox bishop Hrizostom preached the Gospel, archbishop Puljić delivered a sermon and first noted that this year's theme for the Prayer Octave for Christian Unity was chosen by representatives of the Christian Churches in Malta and Gozo. He pointed out that the theme. They expressed to us extraordinary philanthropy, was actually a quote from Chapter 28 of the Acts of the Apostles, which mentions the shipwreck of the Apostle Paul, who, along with his companions, comes to the coast of Malta, where he stays for three months before continuing his journey to Rome.

After the Apostles creed prayer, Prayer for the Unity of Christians and forgiveness, Mr. Hrizostom addressed the present. He thanked cardinal Puljić and Apostolic Nuncio Msgr. Luigi Pezzuto on arrival. He then recalled that, in about 30 years, a thousand years will pass since the Great Schism, and therefore encouraged those present to be witnesses and to gather in Christ’s name “here or in the cathedral and to ask of Him for what we want, which is to heal the wounds and clefts to unite the Church of God”.

The prayer meeting was animated with harmonious singing of the Serbian Singing Society Sloga.
